LOST CAT OUTDOORS Catnip and your scent outside ASAP! - You need to search personally as neighbors won’t search as thoroughly as you would. Bring catnip, treats and a flashlight, even in daylight, it’s very dark under porches etc. Ask to go in yards, not only beside you but in back, on the next street behind you and across your street and on the next street behind them. I found my neighbors cat in the very yard next door to his own house. Although the owner had been calling and walking around the blocks calling, he stayed hunkered down in a dense garden when I found him too afraid to come out. You need to get down and dirty and search under everything. YOU MUST BE CONSISTENT & DILIGENT - Sprinkle LOTS of catnip by entrance and stairs s/he went out. Down to sidewalk. Be generous. DON’T PUT CAT LITTER OUTSIDE. I DON’T RECOMMEND PUTTING FOOD OUTSIDE UNLESS YOU CAN OBSERVE CLOSELY! - If you have predators, such as coyotes, only put food outside when you can actually watch. Dont leave it out overnight or unattended. Raccoons and skunks are pretty harmless but you probably don’t want to attract them. - if you can sit there watching: Put a scoop of real tunafish or rotisserie chicken (not catfood) in a dish, and put it be the door. Preferably, if you can do so safely, leave the door open slightly and place the food dish inside. Or in a nearby window you can leave open enough for cat to climb back inside. If this is not possible, try to shelter it near where cat went out if you have a porch or something. - Hang UNLAUNDERED (not cleaned) pieces of your clothing, like the shirt you wore today, dirty socks, slippers, or the pjs you worn last night, around shrubs, railings - the scent will drift. Also inside for cat to snuggle up on and for your scent. -Use a flashlight (even in daylight) to search under schrubs, porches (bend down and look way under with the light in the dark corners) sheds, under grills, pool decks, garages, bat windows, under cars, up in trees. -Ask your neighbors if you can go into their yards and search too. They may not search as thoroughly as you would. At night, the eyes will glow. -Knock on doors, talk to people face to face, showing them a picture, tell them where you live. This goes a long way. Ask people that walk your neighborhood, dog walkers, postman/woman. - [ ] -Put flyers on telephone poles. Be sure to weatherproof them, You can get sheet protectors (these are plastic sleeves like yiu would find in a photo album, that fit a regular size piece of paper 8 1/2” x 11”) at the dollar store.
