Check its collar for an ID tag. It probably lives nearby you , please ask neighbors,post on Nextdoor in Lost and Found Pets group,post in Cat Owner's group,post on Neighbors app. You don't have to take him to the animal shelter, you'll be taking him further away from his home,which is near you.
