Roy Smokes I had to declaw one of my tom cats. He was fixed, but we had 2 other cats, male and female, and he tore them up so badly we had to take them to the vet. Nearly tore the ear off the male cat!!! It was either declaw or give him up. The vet didn't want to do it, but she did due to the circumstances. We've had him over 10 years now, and though the vet said to keep him inside, he still goes out. He hunts and still gets his prey, and will tear up a neighbor cat- also a male- in a heartbeat. He grabs them with his front kegs, then uses his back legs to tear them up with his back claws. He's developed back legs that are muscular to make up for the loss of his front claws. Declawing is never something you should do for no real reason. Most cats- indoor or not- don't extend claws unless they are sharpening or defending themselves. In our case, we had no choice. If we take in an animal, we keep them till they die.
