Description
Most distinctive: Bright red eyes with oversized head and beak. Missing a talon on back left foot. Head and Face • The head, crown, and neck are a soft slate-gray to brownish-gray, with a slightly textured, almost scaled appearance on the crown feathers. • It has large, prominent bright red eyes with a dark pupil — one of its most eye-catching features. • The beak is large, strong, and solid black/dark charcoal, with a strongly hooked upper mandible. The lower mandible matches in color. • The facial skin around the eyes and beak is dark gray, blending with the head color. Body Coloration (the most distinctive feature) • Breast and upper belly: A vivid, saturated bright orange to orange-red that covers a large portion of the chest. This is the bird’s most recognizable trait and creates a sharp contrast with the gray head. • Lower belly and vent area: Transitions into a bright lime-green to yellowish-green. • The orange chest color wraps around the sides of the body, visible even in profile. Wings, Back, and Tail • The back, mantle, and wings are primarily dark charcoal-gray to blackish, giving the upper body a darker, more somber appearance compared to the bright underparts. • Some green edging or tint is visible on the lower wing coverts and near the tail base in certain lighting. • The tail is relatively long and graduated. The upper surface is dark gray/black, while the underside and outer edges show green and yellow tones (especially noticeable when the bird is perched or viewed from the side). Size, Build, and Legs • Length is approximately 14–16 inches (35–40 cm) from the tip of the beak to the end of the tail — larger than a Sun Conure or Green-cheeked Conure, closer in size to a small Amazon parrot. • It has a stocky, robust build with a broad chest. • Legs and feet are dark gray/charcoal with strong, scaly texture and black talons. It shows a typical zygodactyl foot structure (two toes forward, two back). Missing a talon on the left foot.
Message from Owner
Lugo and Froilan are a mated pair of African Red Bellied parrots. They are named after Saint Froilan who was the patron saint of the City of Lugo. Neither of them ever lived in a cage and flighted. He was hand raised by me before he even had his feathers. We miss him terribly but Froilan most of all. If you find him, give him a peanut and berries, they are his favorite.
