Description

Most distinctive: Bright red eyes with oversized head and beak. Missing a talon on back left foot. Head and Face • The head, crown, and neck are a soft slate-gray to brownish-gray, with a slightly textured, almost scaled appearance on the crown feathers. • It has large, prominent bright red eyes with a dark pupil — one of its most eye-catching features. • The beak is large, strong, and solid black/dark charcoal, with a strongly hooked upper mandible. The lower mandible matches in color. • The facial skin around the eyes and beak is dark gray, blending with the head color. Body Coloration (the most distinctive feature) • Breast and upper belly: A vivid, saturated bright orange to orange-red that covers a large portion of the chest. This is the bird’s most recognizable trait and creates a sharp contrast with the gray head. • Lower belly and vent area: Transitions into a bright lime-green to yellowish-green. • The orange chest color wraps around the sides of the body, visible even in profile. Wings, Back, and Tail • The back, mantle, and wings are primarily dark charcoal-gray to blackish, giving the upper body a darker, more somber appearance compared to the bright underparts. • Some green edging or tint is visible on the lower wing coverts and near the tail base in certain lighting. • The tail is relatively long and graduated. The upper surface is dark gray/black, while the underside and outer edges show green and yellow tones (especially noticeable when the bird is perched or viewed from the side). Size, Build, and Legs • Length is approximately 14–16 inches (35–40 cm) from the tip of the beak to the end of the tail — larger than a Sun Conure or Green-cheeked Conure, closer in size to a small Amazon parrot. • It has a stocky, robust build with a broad chest. • Legs and feet are dark gray/charcoal with strong, scaly texture and black talons. It shows a typical zygodactyl foot structure (two toes forward, two back). Missing a talon on the left foot.

Message from Owner

Lugo and Froilan are a mated pair of African Red Bellied parrots. They are named after Saint Froilan who was the patron saint of the City of Lugo. Neither of them ever lived in a cage and flighted. He was hand raised by me before he even had his feathers. We miss him terribly but Froilan most of all. If you find him, give him a peanut and berries, they are his favorite.

Albert Ferguson My beloved orange winged Amazon, Cosmo, got loose in LA and was gone three days. I had put up $100 reward flyers and a gent finally called and said my bird was eating the buds off his wife’s award-winning roses! Their home was three miles up Pico Blvd. Cosmo had flown into their yard with a flock of pigeons that this older couple fed every afternoon, which supposedly wouldn’t happen because parrots are a hard-beaked species that won’t interact with soft-billed pigeons. My bird was buffed out, far heavier and harder, and he had purple berry stains down his front and on both feet! None of my fears had transpired, and none of the available advice from veterinarians was accurate. He wasn’t paralyzed with fear, killed by an alley cat, stuck hiding in a tree, dying of cold exposure, dehydrated and unable to find water, or starving. He was healthier by far than when he escaped, and he bit me when I reached for him bevause he was so happy being free! He and I spent another 35 years together and lived on sailboats, in a Hawaiian cane shack and on beaches, in Hollywood, CA, in Florida, and finally in Seattle. He co-parented my two sons and slept in bed with them all their young lives. He was their protector and would have fighting anyone who dared to harm them. He from a long-term lung infection at age 36. I still miss him and cry when I recall our closeness and what a dear companion he was. Please don’t worry. I’m sure your little friend is living a great life and making new friends. This offers terrific insights: https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/documentaries/wildparrots/

Thank you. We’re hoping he has made a new flock amongst the wild parrots in the city.
