Lost Bird Tips – What to Do If Your Bird Flies Away If your bird is lost, time and action are critical. Here are some steps to help you locate and bring your bird home safely: 1. Set Up a Safe Return Spot • Place your bird’s cage outside, with the door open, in a visible location. • Put familiar items in or near the cage (favorite toys, perches, or treats). • Hang something with your scent or your bird’s favorite scent nearby to attract them. 2. Search Actively • Walk around your neighborhood calling your bird’s name and playing familiar bird chirps or calls from your phone. • Pause often and listen carefully—your bird may call back. • Bring a treat or favorite food with you to encourage it to come closer if spotted. 3. Post Signs • Create and post flyers with a clear photo of your bird and your contact information. • Place flyers in high-traffic areas: stop signs, mailboxes, local stores, pet shops, vet offices, and community boards. • Post flyers widely—your bird may have traveled farther than you think. • Remember: Not everyone uses social media, so physical flyers are essential. 4. Use Social Media and Online Resources • Post on local: • Lost & Found Facebook groups • Nextdoor • PawBoost • Ring Neighbors app • Include your contact info, bird’s name, and location last seen. • Contact and check with local animal shelters, vets, and wildlife centers. 5. Here are some ideas to assist in your search. *Create a post on Pawboost, NextDoor & Ring, if you haven’t already. *During the daytime: use a wireless Bluetooth speaker to broadcast flock calls or your voice, shake treat bags or anything that might attract attention to food, put the cage out where it can be seen. *During the evening when searching is over, design & print off flyers with photo & contact information. These can be encased in a ziplock to keep weatherproof & posted in areas where allowed like parks, poles & any nearby gathering areas. Also drop off some at vet clinics, pet supply stores, anything within a 5 mile radius. Contact local shelters/rescues & even the police dept - they do pick up found/stray pets all the time. Make sure the world knows - neighbors esp ones that have bird feeders/baths/pools. Hand them out while searching the area. Join every local social media group there is. Run an ad in your local newspaper - some run one for free in lost & found (or cheap). Also check with local bird watcher groups - they’re always out & about. Flyers cannot be placed in mailboxes. *PLEASE CHECK WITH LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTERS & FILE A MISSING PET REPORT*
