Here are a couple of experiences I've had that will give you some hope: Years ago, when I was a teacher at Balboa HS in San Francisco, I opened my classroom on the third floor early one morning, and just outside the window was a cockatiel sitting on the branch of a tall tree that grew in the courtyard below. He stayed there all morning and hardly moved at all. When I had a lunch break, I went to the corner market and bought a seed stick. Then I went in the courtyard and borrowed a ladder from the janitor. I had a student climb the ladder with the seed stick and try to lure the bird down to him. The cockatiel still but not move. I then looked in the classified ads of the Chronicle newspaper, and there under lost pets, was an ad from a lady in Burlingame, 15 miles away, who said her cockatiel named Kiki flew away. So we tried it again and this time the boy called the bird by its name, Kiki. Right away, the bird perked up and squawked, and walked directly to the boy. He gently put it inside his hat and brought it down. We put it in a box with a lid, and I called its owner. I drove to her house after school and she got Kiki back. Another time, I was walking my dogs to the park near my house, and I saw a white parakeet sitting on top of a PG&E box next to a house. I went home and got my fishing net and a paper bag. I returned to the parakeet, gently netted him, put them in the paper grocery bag, and drove him to the shelter, where I dropped him off.
