It attracts dominant neighborhood cats and apex predators, which will terrify Styx and drive her further into hiding. 4. The 2 AM to 5 AM Search Window • Look when the world sleeps: The best time to look for a skittish cat is when ambient neighborhood noise (traffic, dogs, people) stops. • The flashlight trick: Walk slowly at night, holding a flashlight at eye level. Scan the ground, under porches, and deep into bushes looking for eyeshine (the reflection of her eyes). • Listen closely: Because she may be weak or docile from a lack of food and water, she might only manage a faint chirp or meow. Stop and listen frequently. 5. Humane Trapping & Food Stations • Set a humane trap: Since the post in image.png notes she is skittish and "will strike out if approached," a humane Havahart trap is the safest way to recover her without anyone getting hurt. • Use smelly bait: Bait the trap with highly aromatic food like warmed-up wet food, tuna, or sardines. Cover the top and sides of the trap with a familiar blanket or towel so it feels like a safe, dark cave. • Monitor the station: Only leave smelly food out when you are actively monitoring it or checking the trap frequently, so you don't inadvertently invite wildlife. 6. Hyper-Local Outreach • Flyer the immediate neighbors: Print physical flyers and hand them directly to the closest 15–20 neighbors. Ask them for explicit permission to look under their decks, or ask them to check their own sheds and garages.
