Section 2. There will be a section 3. PET SCAMMERS Pet Scammers may contact you. They particularly appear when a reward is offered. Some will tell you they have your pet, some that they can locate them and others they can get your pet back to you. THEY DON’T AND THEY CAN’T! What they want is your money. If anyone requires you send any money to get your pet back; like your offered reward money, money to get your pet back if no reward money offered, money for food, toy, treats, and/or money for surgery and to an untraceable pay site like Venmo, Pay Pal, Apple Pay etc. that’s a RED FLAG. There is a nationwide pet scam that has various versions and has been very successful. Owners of missing pets have sent hundreds and thousands of dollars to these pet scammers. A pet scammer contacts a person with a missing pet and claims to be a real vet or a real facility, like the Humane Society. A real name and possibly a real phone number appear on the phone screen, called doxxing. They will report your pet has been brought in injured and needs immediate surgery. They may also offer to send a “fake” invoice…and if you say yes, will do so. They want prepayment in full. Some places don't do surgery and if they do, they don’t use pay sites for payment. Another RED FLAG, that a payment is required to be sent to an untraceable pay site. Tell pet scammer if you think this person is that that you need time to put the money they are requiring together, get off the phone and contact the vet or facility on the phone screen or fake invoice and call to confirm all this when open. You look up the phone number, don't use the one on the screen or they offer as it may be theirs or a friend’s number. Here are some recent reports. 1. Telling an owner they have the pet when they don’t and demanding money, see above. Require a photo or video of the caller and your pet (selfie) or of your pet…even if they have told you your pet is in surgery. (A pet scammer won’t have a photo as they don’t have your pet but you can check out their reaction when you ask for it.) But be aware AI, Artificial Intelligence can alter an original photo or video so check closely. One person on ND reported getting a lot of these calls and when she requested a photo, the scammers hung up. If they tell you they can’t get you a photo, like their phone screen is cracked, there’s about a 0% chance they have your pet Be suspicious! 2. They will ask the owner for their Google 6 digit telephone number or ask the owner to create one and give it to them. Having that number can cause the scammer to have access to personal accounts and do financial and other damage. Don’t do it! 3. Demand microchip number and if your pet not microchipped, please get that done when pet back and if microchipped, notify the microchip company. Pet Scammers don’t want to reveal the microchip number when asked because they don’t have it. The microchip number is a terrific way to determine if the person responding is a pet scammer or not. 4. Will tell owner they are from a pet tracking company or are a pet tracker and can track your pet. Unfortunately, there are now ND pet scammers involved in this. One recently on ND is a fake comment recommending a fake pet drone tracking company. Even has a link in the comment to their fake Facebook site. To be safe, it’s better not to hire this kind of company or individual. I have seen correspondence between a scammer pet tracking company and a person with a missing pet and they were very professional. Enough so the owner paid the requested amount and of course, never saw his pet or the money, $500.00. Report any fake pet drone tracking companies to ND Admin. Click on the three dots to the right next to the scam commenter’s name or post and choose report. 5. Will tell owner they know the location of the missing pet and will tell them for money. Demand photo. IF they tell you they can’t provide one because where the pet is it is hiding and moves too fast for a photo, you will have to trust your gut on this one. Can also ask to do a Face time with someone who says they have your dog and won't just let you get it. And won't return the dog for free. Could mean a potential pet scammer. With a live Face time you could at least look at your dog, talk to them, have them walk around, bark, etc. If like they won't return your dog for free and want you to send money to an untraceable pay site, refusing to do or making an excuse not to do a live Face Time may also be a Pet Scammer. Be careful. Talk to friends and family after you are contacted, a neutral party, before you consider doing anything, see what they think, scam or not, particularly sending money. These pet scammers know owners of missing pets are vulnerable to scams, desperate to bring their pet home. Please DM me with info if a pet scammer contacts you. That’s how I got the info I have. Judith Morgan. Thank you. These probably aren’t the only pet scams, just the ones I have heard about or people have told me about. There have been owners of lost pets who have reported that they have received fake reports of their missing pet’s condition. There are also cruel people who call and say terrible things about the missing dog. Be aware there are coyote sightings made on Next Door with and without photos several times a week. They have been known to easily jump 8’ or higher fences. Some people no longer let their dogs out unaccompanied in their yard, not even for 5 minutes. They may have them on leash too. Some report using pee pads and/or taking their dog other places outside of their yard. Can install coyote rollers on fences or install a coyote/bobcat resistant dog run for a dog to be outside for limited periods of times in yard unaccompanied. Check them out and read buyers’ reviews. Same with a coyote vest. This is a good reason to install a yard security camera. Consider fitting your pet with a GPS pet tracker after they are back. They attach to pet’s collar and sync to your phone. Some come with a monthly subscription fee, some don’t. Pet owners with indoor only pets and indoor pets with outdoor access buy and use them, for peace of mind. And once your pet has gotten out they may want to try it again. Some official pet trackers allow owner to set up a visual fence on their phone screen and if their pet goes over the line, they are notified. Amazon has a bunch. Read buyers' reviews of any you are interested in. 2 separate people on Next Door have reported that the pet rescues they volunteer for both loan out Tractiv pet trackers to those who are fostering their rescues. ——

Although some pet owners use AirTags, they aren’t advertised by Apple for pet tracking. They need other Apple Products around to bounce off of so don’t work well in some areas, including open ones and neighborhoods that don’t have Apple products. Missing pet owners have reported on here the Air Tag didn’t work when needed and that may be why. In other cases the tag shows them in someone’s home, when they aren’t there…embarrassing situation when a stranger is accused of having the missing pet. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date contact information on it…and that microchip has current contact information too. Notify microchip company your pet is missing. Can clicker train your pet. Pets like to learn and do tricks. Can teach to “come,” like out of hiding from a bush. Or “stay” in which your pet is trained to stay on a mat away from the door to prevent door dashing and for many other behaviors. The only other thing needed is their favorite treat. Clickers are available online or at pet stores. Online training videos. I wrote my Pet Guides to help missing and found pet owners and finders. Use whatever information that you think will help you. Someone just posted yesterday thanking her for helping them find their missing dog. It includes not going out and walking around searching for them as you or anyone else your dog knows the scent of spreads theirs scent confusing the dog and they won’t know which way to go. And if there is a recent physical sighting of your dog, she can get more involved, like with tracking and humane trapping, so keep her posted about any sightings. When you talk to her, ask her if you should contact Animal Control Services. If Babs tells you yes or if you have to leave her a message instead, contact Animal Control when they are open. Contact ALL shelters within 20 miles of where your pet was lost. Call the shelter more than once. Your pet may be turned in after you last called or looked online. Animals unclaimed within the three-day holding period may be made available for adoption. Animals without license tags or microchips are held for three days, Injured or diseased animals that are suffering may be held fewer days. If we can identify the owner, pets are held for five business days before being placed with adoptable animals.” Some people give up too soon with checking the shelters. Sometimes it can take months before a missing pet shows up in one. Be sure you constantly check shelters. And sometimes a pet is left at the wrong shelter so expand your range. The Humane Society foundation paperwork say they are involved with “adoptable” pets. Shelters are overcrowded, making it stressful for pets there, and as daily new pets are brought in decisions have to be made. They can euthanize. And sometimes the Humane Society transfers pets to County shelters that also euthanize. Staff are doing the best they can. But that puts any pets that aren’t or may not be immediately adoptable, injured, sick, old, have behavioral problems, etc. at risk. Search and post on ND regularly as your posts over time will scroll down. Figure out a posting schedule. It’s postings, including sightings of wandering dogs on neighborhood sites, with and without photos, that help missing pets be found. They can be tracked through these postings. ND also has a missing pet group to join. Also post and search on sites, like popular, free missing and found pet site, pawboost.com. Facebook has several, including Lost & Found Pets of San Diego County, Lost and Found Animals in San Diego County. And San Diego, CA - Lost & Found Dogs, Cats & Pets. The Ring company has an app where people can post missing, seen and found dogs, that even those that don’t have a Ring device can look and post on. If your dog has escaped into your yard, check every inch of it. Use a flashlight to look for eye shine. Under your house, in cracks, under vehicles, wherever they can hide. You can look for them now, if you see this, night or day, the sooner the better. More information below, including what you can do immediately, like put out food and water, making sure predators don’t get to where you have it, but your dog can. Shake treats box or bag and call out their name. This quote is from a December 2024 interview with Babs Fry in the San Diego Magazine, “Her first piece of advice is one that many owners find counterintuitive: ‘I would not be out actively looking for your dog,” Fry says. I think she means outside of your yard, as your scent will be there and that’s fine. ‘The biggest mistake people make is they go off racing for their dog. And their dog is looking for them, and now they’re spreading their smell everywhere. That creates confusion for the pup, Fry continues, and extends the time they’re lost. The odds a dog returns home are directionally proportional to people staying out of the way.’ The second step, she told a woman with a lost dog, is to put an old sock in her front yard, because her dog will be acutely familiar with the scent and that she, Babs, is available 24/7.” If you are able to drive around looking for your dog without getting out of the car or leaving the window open, anything that would spread your scent, than that is a possible way for you to search, unless and until you see and get to your dog. And if you want someone to go out looking for your dog, choose a friend or relative who the dog doesn’t know their scent and have them do the search. And if they see your dog, have them notify you immediately. Around your home have your surrogate searcher take a bag of your dog’s favorite treats and shake it and call out the dog’s name in the neighborhood. Have them check your yard and neighbors’ yards. Have them look under vehicles and buildings, in bushes, using a flashlight to catch eye shine both in the neighborhood and in yards. There are things to do around your home to entice them back if they are nearby, such as with food and water. Place food and water around your yard, changing them so items don’t become rotten and stale, and away from where a predator can get there. Put cloth items they lie on and your unwashed clothes around your yard. Only if you feel secure enough, consider leaving a gate, a garage side door or home door open to see if they come in. Post signs and leave flyers with your neighbors and on their doors if they are not home. For signs use neon poster paper, comes in 22” x 28”. Can be cut down. Have the surrogate searcher(s) talk to neighbors and leave flyers with the same information as on signs for these neighbors and on the doors of neighbors who aren’t home. Ask neighbors to check their yards and any cameras periodically. Sending Section 2 separately.
