Ginger cat ,usually friendly ,some times has curst on his eyes and cannot do a normal meow

This cat came to us after being sick we've had him for years and took care of him to our best ability unfortunately he's gone lost for many weeks and we have tried many ways of finding him but to no avail most of the families given up but and thinks he's dead but I believe not please help us
