Kovu Male Cat

Aspendale Gardens, VIC 3195
UPDATE: FOUND 🩶🐾 After five weeks missing, our beautiful boy is finally home. Before I tell you how we found him, I need to rewind to three weeks ago. Like so many of you, I truly believed Kovu had either been stolen or was warm inside someone else's home with people who had decided they loved him too much to have him scanned for a microchip. I was so wrong. Three weeks ago, someone contacted me claiming they'd found Kovu. They had taken my missing poster and used AI to create photos of him in their home. They had even edited him to look just like Kovu did when he went missing, even including an imperfect little piece of gunk in one eye. I was aware these scams existed... but damn, it was convincing. Heartbreakingly convincing. They told me they were busy at work and I'd be able to collect him that evening. I cried tears of absolute relief. I thought our nightmare was over. As the day went on, everything changed. First came the request for the reward money. Then it became, "It's not fair on my kids. They've had him for two weeks. He's their cat now." The demands became bigger and bigger. Every time I asked for proof that it was really Kovu (something only the real finder would know, like the little tag on his right ear) I was told I was being unreasonable and difficult. By that evening it became devastatingly clear that it had all been a cruel scam. I wasn't getting my boy back. That night I cried a thousand tears. I lost faith in humanity. It completely broke me. For the first time, I truly started wondering if I'd ever see Kovu again. Then Monday night changed everything. A beautiful woman leaving Costco noticed an all-grey cat wandering amongst the pallets in the Moorabbin Costco carpark, searching through rubbish bins for food. She managed to take a couple of blurry photos before he disappeared. Something told her he belonged to someone. She searched missing pet posts, found Kovu's, tracked down my phone number through the Kingston Facebook page, and sent me a text. By the time I saw it, 90 minutes had already past. The photos were blurry and we weren't even sure it was him, but my husband and I jumped straight in the car. For over forty minutes we searched every corner of the carpark, calling his name in the freezing cold. Nothing. Then I thought... If he'd somehow survived five freezing Melbourne winter weeks out there, he must have found somewhere warm to shelter. I wandered through the surrounding industrial est, between factories, steaming generators and loading docks, calling his name over and over. Eventually, I turned around, ready to give up for the night. After all, it could have been any grey cat. Then I heard it. The faintest little "meow." I looked towards a bush and saw his hesitant little grey face peeking out. He was trying so hard to work out if it was really me. The moment he realised it was... He started screaming. Not meowing. Screaming. He came running towards me with every bit of strength he had left. Skin and bones. Weak and shaky on his little legs. The videos speak for themselves (I'll add a couple to the comments section). I called my husband to bring the carrier. He opened the door and Kovu didn't hesitate for even a second. He ran straight inside as though he was saying, "Please... take me home now." When I picked him up, I couldn't believe how light he was. He'd lost more than a third of his body weight. He was filthy, exhausted and starving. But he never stopped purring. When we got home, I gave him his first bath. The water turned dirty brown. Anyone who knows cats knows they absolutely hate getting wet, but he purred through the entire bath. He knew we were helping him. He finally knew he was safe. We're certain he did exactly what he always loves doing (jumped into the back of a delivery van near our hse to explore or say hello) and ended up nearly 6 kilometres away in a place he had no idea how to escape from. The route is almost entirely busy main roads. There is simply no way he wandered there on his own. For five weeks, our pampered boy survived as an alley cat. To the beautiful angel who noticed one lonely grey cat in a sea of concrete, took those blurry photos, searched for missing pets and somehow found my phone number... You didn't just save Kovu. You gave our family back a piece of our hearts!! You restored my faith in humanity! And so did every single one of you. I have been completely overwhelmed by how many people cared about a little grey cat they'd never even met. The number of shares, messages, comments, sightings, prayers, and words of encouragement has been extraordinary. Every single share mattered. If even one person hadn't shared Kovu's post, there's every chance it would never have reached the woman who saw him that night. She may never have known he was missing, never found his post, and never have found my phone number. Every click of that Share button helped bring our boy home. To everyone who shared our posts, searched, checked sheds, kept an eye out, sent messages, offered advice, prayed, cried with us and refused to let us give up... Thank you. You carried our family through a very difficult time of our lives, only months after Kovu's brother past. Five weeks ago, I thought we'd probably never see him again. On Monday night, against all odds, our family became whole again. Welcome home, Kovu. You've no idea how loved you are. 🩶🐾❤️
