Kim Dale So sorry about your kitty. I’ll share with you what I share with all lost cat owners. Please read the following carefully: First, it’s important to understand that cats are incredibly resilient and instinctively know how to survive. Even if you know your cat’s personality very well, once they are frightened, they can go into survival/flight mode and may not behave the way they normally do. That said, she is very likely still close to home. * Indoor cats are usually much closer than people think — often within a few houses unless something frightened them further away. * Indoor/outdoor cats tend to have a larger roaming range, so keep that in mind while searching. Things to do ASAP: • Thoroughly search every nook and cranny inside your home. Cats can hide in unbelievably small spaces. • Go out late at night with a flashlight and a can of stinky wet food. Shine the flashlight low to look for glowing eyes in hidey-holes. You need to be patient and consistent. • Check: * Garages * Window wells * Under porches/decks * Sheds * Bushes/trees * Crawl spaces • Ask neighbors to thoroughly check their garages, sheds, porches, trees, and window wells as well. • Leave out strong-smelling wet food. • Create a scent station using dirty laundry, bedding, or worn clothing. Leave a scent trail leading toward an open door or window. • If she is microchipped, make sure the information is up to date immediately. • Contact: * Animal Control * Local shelters * Veterinary offices * Fill out a missing pet report • Ask neighbors if they have Ring or security cameras and if they can review footage. • Put up flyers everywhere nearby and hand out postcard-sized versions door-to-door. Make sure your mail carrier gets one too. • Make large neon poster signs and place them at major intersections nearby. • Post everywhere: * Nextdoor * Local Facebook lost pet groups * PawBoost * Pet Harbor * Craigslist * Reddit • Tag your car:Missing Animal Response Vehicle Tag Program Important guidance when searching: When cats are hiding silently from perceived predators, the last thing they want is attention drawn to them. Calling their name can sometimes increase anxiety because it makes them feel “noticed” and unsafe. Instead: * Speak casually and calmly. * Talk on the phone while walking. * Keep your tone relaxed and unconcerned. * Avoid sounding panicked or desperate. Your cat picks up on your emotional energy. Calm energy helps them feel safer. Helpful things to use instead of calling their name: * Gently rattling a food bowl * Crinkling a treat bag * Playing familiar household sounds * Calling the names of other pets in the home * Playing recordings of feeding time or happy household sounds Excellent resource on lost cat behavior:Missing Animal Response – Lost Cat Behavior Reach out if you need more help or guidance. Here are some tips to help bring your cat back home: Search the neighborhood and ask if you can look in their their yard yourself rather than just ask if they've seen your cat. They might not have noticed if a cat has been hiding under their deck. LOOK IN SMALL SPACES such as bat window wells, under cars, bushes, sheds, under decks, wood piles, drainage pipes etc. ***Please go outside and call for her especially once it is dark and quiet. A live trap rented from the pound may be successful. One tip is to use a baby monitor or other security camera pointed in your yard toward the trap so you can monitor if and when your cat is coming around since it’s often in the dark of night. Check small spaces she could be hiding under or in. A number of local cats were recently found locked in neighbor's garage attics (ask neighbors to check their garages, sheds, window wells, etc), and another cat was recently found in a nearby drainage ditch.** PUT OUT THEIR LITTERBOX. Sounds weird, but it works. It's about smells. Also maybe put out their bedding or your clothing. PUT OUT SMELLY FOOD like sardines, tuna, canned cat food. Some have put it in a garage with the door part way open, or they even left the window open and food near the sill. Also LEAVE YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPEN a foot. Some cats have come home and been found meowing in their garage in the middle of the night! Post on the Next Door website or app as well to let people in your neighborhood know. Additionally, post on Craigslist, and the HelpingLostPets page and also the Pawboost Facebook page. A free flyer can be made on Pawboost and also on HelpingLostPets. And definitely contact authorities. If you have created the free flyer, you can email or leave a printout with them. Please check the pound every couple days.
