My heart goes out to you. I have been through it myself. Here are some tips I've put together over years of working with rescue. * Don't wait for him/her to come home. Yes, he/she may do that, but most cats are scared and go hiding in small places, mostly close to home, a few houses or a block away. (They can go a few miles if chased or desperate, mostly in desperation looking for water and food.) They hide under cars, decks, patios, porches, in sheds, drain pipes, stairs, window wells, garages, bushes, woods, up trees, roofs, etc. Walk around calling their name, shaking a treat bag or favorite toy with bell. Carry smelly food to encourage them if scared and hiding. Listen very, very carefully for low meows. Use a flashlight to catch and reflect their eyes. A good time to go looking is twilight and very early morning/pre-dawn, when it’s quiet and calm so they may feel safer to come out and it’s also feeding time. * Talk to and alert everyone you know and that lives in your vicinity, as well as local businesses. Notify and check with animal control/shelters/humane societies (both Elmbrook Humane Society and MADACC in Milwaukee) and local veterinary offices. Post on and check lost sites, such as Lost Cats of Wisconsin (file your report there to create your free flyer and a post on Pet FBI ), Nextdoor, various community FB pages, Craig's List. Post flyers on corners/posts, in front of your home, and with neighbors, businesses, and anyone in the vicinity. * Put out a carrier or something right outside your door for shelter and safety. Place clothing/blankets with a familiar scent, yours and/or theirs, inside or nearby. * Searching, go out a few blocks, then back close, then out farther and back close. You may miss the cat or the cat may move or may not be meowing. Repeat over and over, looking carefully on the ground for paw prints and for places they might hide. * If you have a garage, leave open with smelly food favorites, water, clothing/blankets with familiar scent, their old litter box in garage. If you have a family dog who is close to the cat, give the dog something with the cat’s scent and then a treat; and then go walking around, watching your dog very carefully. You can even do this with another cat close to home, if you have a cat harness and leash. * Get or borrow a humane live animal trap and set it up with tuna or some other smelly cat food. Be sure to check it frequently. But in extreme weather, do not set it unless you can monitor it constantly and bring in immediately if caught. * And never stop looking! Never give up! Too many give up too soon. It may take weeks or more before you find and/or someone turns in your cat to an animal shelter. Make sure to contact and also GO IN PERSON to your local shelter/humane society to look at all of the cats they have there. Don’t rely on just pictures or the person answering the phone to have all updated info on who they have there. They do their best, but you need to check in person on a regular basis.

LOST CAT OPEN DOOR Scatter the contents of your hoover bag around the outside boundary of your home - they can scent their way home from miles away, using the familiar smell of your home. If putting out clothing make sure that it hasn’t been washed so that it smells of “you”. Going out late at night/ early morning when it is quieter and less noise distraction around will make it easier for you to hear each other’s calls. If you are calling for him make sure you do this as you walk towards your home not away from it so that if he follows the direction of your voice you’re leading him home, not further away. Also ask any neighbours to check their sheds/ outbuildings in case he’s been inquisitive and got trapped inside somewhere. If he is an indoor cat he is likely scared and hiding somewhere very close by - look under/behind any items/objects that he may be seeking shelter from - under bushes, behind bins etc. when searching at night take a torch - the light from its beam will reflect in his eyes and you will be able to spot him even if he doesn’t respond to your calls. Put up posters in all surrounding streets and inform the microchip company that he is missing.Put out water, and some of YOUR dirty clothes (dirty socks are nice and stinky)/blankets (dry in dryer first to enhance smell). Depending on the weather, you might want to put out a plastic tub with straw for shelter. Go out every morning and evening walking (folks seem successful around 10:30 p.m., but don't go alone) with food/treats in bowl rattling it, calling your cats name. Cats are often hiding within a 5-house radius. Do NOT give up. There was a cat a week or so ago, they went out every night for 5 nights, finally on the 5th night, they heard it's meow, it was trapped in a neighbor's shed. Another was hiding in a tree from the neighbor's dogs. Check buildings, bushes, trees, and storm drains around your house. Also in the house/garage, keep all doors/closets OPEN in case it's hiding in the house. If you can, leave door cracked open from which cat would most likely sneak back in during the night. If desperate, sprinkle your urine near the cracked door as stronger scent guidance. Worked for us!

Lost cats Search for him/ her using a flashlight. He/ she will be frightened and will hide. It also might not respond to your calling him/ her. A flashlight will reflect in the eyes, allowing you to see it in dark spaces. Use it day and night.

Please check shelters and humane societies near you in person if possible because pictures can be deceiving - because someone could bring in your cat. Not everyone uses social media so please share a poster with neighbors and nearby businesses about your missing cat. Check all possible hiding spaces your cat may be hiding in because of being frightened or chased by a predator. Sometimes when hiding cats can get trapped - in garages, sheds or other outside buildings on a property, in vehicles (sometimes cats are unknowingly to driver transported to a different area so do not be surprised or doubtful if someone posts about a cat that looks like yours and its miles from your home area), egress windows, basements, old buildings by way of broken windows, in trees, in nearby businesses… Sometimes cats travel at night or early morning… I hope that you find and are reunited with your cat very soon. Keep searching because it may take days, weeks or longer- just as you are searching for your cat, your cat is looking for you. 🙏🐾♥️
