In case you weren’t aware, in California, pets are considered “personal property” and if you find a loose pet you are required to use reasonable efforts to find the owner. Looking for the owner is NOT optional. It is required by California law. That includes reporting the pup to the nearest animal shelter on Day One! Also checking for microchip; posting in Pet Lost and Found pet forums, ie PawBoost; reporting that you’re fostering the dog; make a “found pet” poster (free in PawBoost) and make copies on NEON paper, posting them around your neighborhood., local stores, schools, vets. 80% of lost pets are found within ONE mile of home, so check your local area and speak with neighbors. Remember, some older adults do not use social media. By the way, this dog will only be considered legally adopted through the local shelter or a bonafide pet rescue. Do not assume pets are dumped by their owner. Many are stolen. I like to remind people that if that was your dog, wouldn’t you want somebody to try to find you as the owner? Of course you would! So, I’m just asking that you do the right thing and look hard for the dog’s owner. One more thing, if someone finds a pet and keeps it, and never attempts to find the owner, they can be charged with Theft or Grand Theft ($950+), depending on the value of the dog. But that’s not really not my point. My point is that you at least need to try to find the original owner of the dog. And it’s MINIMALLY a 14 day hold. The goal is to return this sweet pup to the owner. You can reference this link for additional information regarding the law or what you’re required to do when you find a lost dog.
