I'm a long-time cat rescuer. There's a very high chance that this animal has been abandoned by someone who moved away. The absence of "lost animal" flyers covering the neighborhood will confirm that. Many of the adult cats who come into rescue groups were abandoned by people who moved away and cruelly left their cats behind, so, heartless as it is, it's nothing new. We are getting many more reports of abandoned cats this year than previous years, as exemplified by the number of such posts online. You can take the cat to any veterinarian. They will scan the cat for a microchip for no charge. If no one legitimately claims him, and if you're inclined to keep him, do so. I can refer you to a vet for low-cost spaying/neutering, shots, etc. I would offer to take this cat myself, except that I don't have any open foster homes right now, which is why I almost always have an active post seeking foster homes for cats. If I get this cat fixed and vaccinated (I can), would you be willing to foster him until I can get him adopted? Otherwise, I suggest you find a rescue www.nokillnetwork.org. You could also try Boston Animal Rescue League or MSPCA. Both have full-time veterinary staffs.
