If found, don’t pick up by his top shell. It's part of his backbone and ribs. Pick up from underneath.

Thanks for the heads up and for keeping an eye out!! That is likely a sulcata tortoise and is a much larger species. Keep looking for a little guy that would fit in the palm or an open hand.

When was this? Did it look like the photo? How big was it? This guy is 7-8" long and is not dark. We do have native western box turtles here, but rarely in the suburban areas and mostly in the plains.

I saw a tortoise on Valmont road, near Teller Farm North Trailhead, where there's a hill. He was heading North. I'm so sorry I didn't know he was lost, but later I realized he must have been a pet. 😓
