Message from Owner

Missing microchipped cat Sailor near Blaine and Birch Bay. Hello, Sailor went missing on September 26th. She doesn’t have a history of being out of the neighborhood beyond a block or two. She went out early on Saturday morning and instead of coming in for breakfast at 10 she has not returned. She typically stays in through the night. Four weeks ago we were threatened by a neighbor with ant poison and it was also suggested that this same person may have tried to relocate her. Please keep a look out for her wherever you are from Blaine to Ferndale and just east of Birch Bay. Sailor is very smart, sweet, healthy. She is microchipped and has her shots so I’m hoping she can navigate time away from home. Your help would be welcome and gratefully received.

Holly G Hamilton I hope your kitty is safe and home soon. ❤️ Here are some potentially helpful tips for finding a lost cat. Please forgive me if you've already tried some of these or if anything doesn't apply to your situation. I’m sharing as many ideas as possible because sometimes one small thing can make all the difference. 🏠 General Tips for Any Lost Cat Search indoors thoroughly first. Cats can hide in incredibly small or unexpected places. Check closets, behind and underneath furniture and appliances, inside cupboards, basements, garages, and any other enclosed spaces. Use a flashlight, even during the day. Search very close to home first. Especially with indoor-only cats, being frightened can make them hide silently nearby rather than travel far. Check your property and the neighboring properties carefully. Search quietly and slowly. A frightened cat may freeze and remain completely silent even when their person is nearby. Avoid chasing or repeatedly calling loudly. Gentle talking or familiar sounds may be better. After searching, give the area some quiet time. Search at dusk, overnight, and around dawn when things are quieter. Use a flashlight to check under decks, steps, sheds, porches, vehicles, bushes, fences, and other hiding places. Watch for eyeshine reflecting in the flashlight beam. Ask neighbors to physically check their property. Ask them to look inside garages, sheds, crawlspaces, under decks and porches, and anywhere a cat could accidentally become trapped. Don't rely only on asking whether they've seen the cat. Check trees and elevated hiding places if appropriate for your cat. Also check places where a frightened cat could become stuck or trapped. 👕 Familiar Scents Set up a scent station using something that smells strongly like the cat's favorite person, such as an unwashed shirt, pillowcase, or small towel. Familiar human scent can help make the area feel recognizable and safe. If the scent item is outside, refresh it regularly, especially after rain or when the scent has faded. I would not rely on putting the cat's litterbox outside as a way to bring them home. Advice about outdoor litterboxes is mixed, and they can potentially attract other cats or wildlife. Familiar human scent is a safer option to focus on. 🐾 If You Think Your Cat Is Nearby If you have sightings or other evidence that your cat is close, consider a humane live trap. A local shelter, rescue, or experienced lost-pet volunteer may be able to help you choose and set one up correctly. Use food that your cat finds especially tempting as bait. A small amount can also be used to create a short trail leading toward the trap if appropriate. Monitor a live trap closely and frequently. Never leave a trapped cat exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, or direct sun. A camera pointed toward the trap can be extremely helpful for monitoring it and seeing whether your cat—or another animal—is visiting. A towel or blanket can be used to help provide shade and make a trapped cat feel more secure, while still allowing adequate ventilation. If you aren't able to monitor a trap appropriately, ask a rescue or experienced volunteer for help rather than setting it and leaving it unattended. 📷 Cameras Can Help If possible, use a motion-activated wildlife/security camera near your home, the last-known location, a suspected hiding area, feeding station, or trap. A camera can tell you whether your cat is actually visiting, what time they are coming, and whether another animal is taking the food. This can be especially helpful before deciding where and when to trap. 📍 If Your Cat Was Lost Close to Home Keep searching the immediate area even if you haven't seen them. A frightened cat can remain hidden and completely silent for days. Ask neighbors to check their properties repeatedly if necessary. A cat that was trapped inside a shed or garage may not be discovered immediately. If it is safe and practical, you can leave a door or window available for the cat to return through while you are home and able to monitor it. Keep the area around your home calm and familiar. Avoid having lots of people searching at once if your cat is extremely fearful. 🚗 If Your Cat Was Lost Away From Home Start at the exact location where they escaped and search outward gradually. A frightened cat may hide very close to the escape point. Set up familiar human scent at the last-known location if it is safe and permitted. Avoid immediately assuming your cat has traveled a long distance. Search the closest hiding places thoroughly while gradually expanding your search. If you get a sighting, don't chase the cat. Note exactly where and when they were seen and consider using a camera or humane trap in that area. 📢 Get the Word Out Put up clear posters and distribute flyers in the surrounding neighborhood. Post in local lost-and-found pet groups, community Facebook groups, Nextdoor, neighborhood pages, and other local pet networks. Include a recent photo, the location and date the cat was last seen, distinguishing features, and reliable contact information. Contact local animal shelters, animal control, veterinary clinics, rescues, and other organizations that may receive found animals. Check them regularly rather than assuming someone will recognize your cat immediately. If your cat is microchipped, report them as missing and make sure your contact information is current. Check local found-pet listings and online classifieds as appropriate for your area. ❤️ Most Importantly Please don't give up hope just because you haven't found your cat quickly. Lost cats can remain hidden for days or even longer, and they may not respond when their person calls. Keep searching, keep checking nearby hiding places, keep asking neighbors, and follow up on every credible sighting. If you have evidence that your cat is nearby, a camera and/or carefully monitored humane trap can be incredibly helpful. I hope you find your kitty safe and home very soon. ❤️🐾
