Debbie Cummings Layla is beautiful! I know you are very worried. The ideas I’m sharing are from a study of 1,232 lost cats by Dr. Jacquline Rand, an animal researcher, and other experts. The number one method that was the most successful in recovering a missing cat was CONDUCTING A PHYSICAL SEARCH OF THE AREA. Most escaped indoor-only cats were roughly a 2 ½ house radius from their owner’s home. They are so frightened by their outdoor surroundings that they will hide. They may not even come if you call for them. Start with the homes that are close by. However, you may need to expand the search area. Look around air conditioners, underneath decks, in sheds, drainage ditches and pipes, trees and bushes, and under cars. Asking neighbors to look for your cat can be tricky. They will say yes, but often they are UNABLE OR UNWILLING to do a deep search. Most people will let you know if they see the cat. However, many people are unable to get down on the ground and look under a deck or automobile. They will go into a shed, but may not be able or willing to move items and do a deep search. Take a flyer with information and ask the neighbors in the surrounding homes if YOU CAN SEARCH their deck or in their garage, etc. , or DO IT TOGETHER . That is where they are most likely to be . Obtaining permission from your neighbor to search their property is critical. One lost cat owner got permission from the neighbors to do a search on their property in the early morning hours (3 to 5 AM is a key time) and late at night. They also contacted the police to let them know they were doing a search. Good idea! They found their cat. There have been a couple of recent postings from pet owners who found their cat in a drainage ditch or pipe! If you have other animals, watch them. If they are spending a lot of time looking out a certain window, that’s a good indication the missing cat is in that area. Wildlife and motion activated cameras are also helpful. Owners often see their cat on the property late at night or in the early hours. Many have reported their cat actually came up onto their porch, but was unable to get back in. If it is safe, leave a garage door or entry door partially open. Ask neighbors to check their Ring camera. Many people are successful trapping their cats. Lyla has been missing for a while. She may be searching for food . A humane trap could lure her in. Some rescue organizations will rent or let you borrow humane traps . There are some good YouTube videos on how to trap your cat. Note: DO NOT put a litter box or food out. Cats instinctively cover up their waste to protect themselves . The litter box and food will attract predators and Tom cats. You don’t want your cat to be chased further away from home. Food in a trap needs to be closely monitored. Check on it frequently. Place some dirty socks, clothing, and pillow cases etc. with your scent on them outside, near where they exited. YOUR scent will attract your kitty. Refresh the items to keep the smell strong. Again, don’t put food, or items with your cat’s smell on them out. You don’t want other aggressive cats coming around. Make mini flyers with a photo and contact information . Hand them out to your neighbors and anyone in the area that will listen. There are some people who don’t go on social media. Post a large sign in your yard ,or in a common area. Make it the size of a Political or Realty sign. LOST CAT LIVES HERE ! PLEASE HELP! Include a photo or description and contact information. Bicycle riders, runners, walkers, delivery people etc. will see the poster. Contact local shelters, the Humane Society, pet care businesses, and groomers. Get on every pet loss group that you can. Go in person to the shelter to look. Calling is good, but they sometimes get overwhelmed with calls. Ask your mail carrier, neighborhood workers and delivery people to be on the lookout. Put out something that she's familiar with that carries her scent (a bed, a blanket but NOT a litterbox). CALL FOR HER IN THE QUIET, STILL HOURS (11pm-7am). THIS IS SO IMPORTANT (5am seems to be the luckiest hour)!!!!!!! Scared cats move around while the rest of the world is still. Put out food in intervals (not at night) when you can keep an eye out. Talk to your neighbors, generally, they don't go far and find an open garage or shed to huddle down. If these suggestions don’t work: lost pet cats may not respond the way you’d expect your beloved kitty to and they may not just come to your calling so be prepared to have to use a humane trap (she will return to herself once she’s back inside) and put signs in your local pet store (if someone takes her in they will need litter and food).
