Message from Owner

Posting this for my mother’s two cats that unexpectedly got out last night. Both were last seen in the community of Deerbrook in Medford. As stated in the flyer, Atticus is a senior cat but he is extremely friendly and knows his name and will likely come when called. Mama is very skittish and is largely afraid of strangers and may run away if approached. Please call or text the number listed with any possible information. Thank you all so much! 🩷

Cats have a great sense of smell and can smell familiar scents from a mile or more away. So put out some something that you have worn that has your scent. Then at night leave a window up enough that you can hear him if he makes a noise. Calling him may help. A guy who had read many suggestions, including trying to call the cat after it was dark, went a bit further and used a Speaker Phone to call his cat. The cat came running out of the woods and into his arms immediately. I am no longer suggesting putting out cat's bedding or something with the cat's scent as it will draw predators. I researched this fact after getting a post from a woman with a rescue in NC. FREE TO COPY AND REPOST. FROM DECADES OF ADVICE PASSED ALONG BY MOUTH AND SINCE 2014 ON THE INTERNET. RESCUE GROUPS ALL KNOW THIS. * Tip from the West coast: If you are a neighbor or friend, trying to help rescue a cat that is not yours, the cat identifies you as an enemy. Please stop.

Indoor only cats rarely will show themselves during the daytime & often will not respond to you calling them. So the chances of a neighbor or even you seeing them during the daytime is unfortunately pretty low. They hide close by, then often return during the night to where they got out of your house, & they try to get back in. If your cat is strictly an indoor cat, then if possible, try leaving the exit point open after dark to see if they will walk back in on their own. Having a camera set up outside the exit point is very important to alert you if they’re approaching. If you don’t have a camera at the door your cat escaped through, I recommend buying one today or tomorrow at Walmart & get it set up before dark. If you can’t leave the exit point open after dark, then you still need to set a motion activated camera outside the exit point so you will be alerted if your cat returns during the night. Often you’re sleeping & you don’t know that your cat is returning, trying to find a way back inside. If you get a sighting on the camera, then you can set a humane trap outside the exit point the following night & have it ready at dark. Either way, do not go outside once you leave the exit point open OR you’ve set a humane trap. Let the camera do the work of alerting you to movement outside that door. I don’t recommend setting food or a humane trap outside the exit point until you get a sighting on the camera. You don’t want to attract wildlife & other roaming cats, which will prevent your cat from approaching by having food sitting outside the exit point. Wait until you know your cat is returning before setting a humane trap. Your cat probably won’t approach your house if you’re outside walking around either. Secure any other pets in another room if you leave the exit point open. Place some of your worn clothes outside the exit point for scent & just inside the door. Do not put the litter box outside as it will attract other neighborhood cats who will prevent your cat from returning. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_-Dqmx2sU&pp=0gcJCWQCo7VqN5tD&ra=m

Some tips still apply 🐾 They usually don’t venture far. It’s probably scared & hiding near by in bushes or an open garage. Most kitties will stay put in their safe hiding spot. ( if they’re not fixed they can wonder further, depends on circumstances) Ask neighbors to check their sheds, decks, garages. They usually venture out at night after 24-48hrs when they start getting hungry. The “witching” hour when they come out is 3am. If you see your pet, don’t try to grab it, it’s still on survival mode and will run. Just sit down maybe with some treats and let your pet come to you. (Remember, never put the litterbox outside. Other cats will mark it & scare your cat away. Just in case, also set some humane traps near by, hide them in the bushes where your pet might hide. Good luck & don’t lose hope. Pray to St Anthony, he hasn’t let me down. 🙏🏻🐾
