Message from Owner

In Dec 2025 this cat started coming around. Cold winter he had food water heated hses and stayed close. We took him to get fixed, shots, FIV/felv tested (neg) now we treat him monthly for flea and tick. We have indoor cats and (we call him orange and white OW) seems to love outdoors. During bad weather he will come in our garage and sleep. Yes he wanders but it’s never longer than a day so now 5 days, it’s nice weather and no sightings. I’ve posted on Facebook town page and others have seen him in the past but not recently. I think millstone cares about animals and someone would post if they gave him a home or if he was hit by a car. We miss him.

FINDING INDOOR ONLY CATS WHO ARE LOST “Indoor only” cats rarely travel far - they seek an immediate hiding place (under a deck or porch, under brush, in a garage or shed) and hunker down out of fear. 1. Immediately start searching around your house in garage, sheds, bushes. 2. Visit neighbors in a 3 block radius and ask to search under houses, in sheds, garages. Use a flashlight (get on your hands and knees and shine the light under decks etc.) - shake a treat bag and call it’s name and listen for a possible soft meow. (they are too scared to come out). Cats OFTEN get locked in a neighbor’s shed or garage that had been open – please walk around them and softly call the cat’s name and listen for a meow. They can stay in this spot for weeks! Indoor only cats RARELY come out during the day - they only come out after dark and into the wee hours of the morning. 3. Be sure to check the surrounding trees as cats are often chased up trees and will sit up there for days and days….sewer drains on your street, and inside the wheel and engine areas underneath cars close by. 4. \ Open your door throughout the night and call it’s name - often they will come running back in! Sit outside on your deck/porch and walk around your property and call it’s name during the night… and the number one thing that seems to be working is to leave the door ajar for it to get back in during the middle of the night! (Lock all your other pets away for the night!) Most cats have been coming in on their own between 1-4 am. If you have other pets, make sure they are secured in a locked room so they cannot get out! Put all their smelly stuff (see below) near the door outside and inside as well including a small trail of food from the outside to inside – do not leave bowls of food outside as they will eat and leave! 5. Immediately, Set a humane "Hav a Heart" type trap which you can borrow from a local Trap Neuter Rescue Group or your local Shelter. This is sometimes the ONLY way to catch a scared indoor only cat. Put their own wet and dry food in the trap so it seems “familiar” to them. You can also try to use smelly cat wet food or tuna in oil - chop up very find so they cannot "grab and go". Put food on newspaper - do not use bowls or cans they can pull out. Place the trap in a location that a cat would feel comfortable going in it –up against the side of a building or just inside a garage or shed against a wall. Do not place out in open. Place it near the door that cat ran out of or place several around the house - Do not Cover the trap! NEVER leave a set trap trap unattended without monitoring as other wild animals may go into the trap. Never leave the cat in trap overnight. Must watch the trap. The most important thing with traps with back doors is that you secure the tiny fold over latch on the back door before you clip it shut!!!! Test back door to make sure it does not lift up. 6. Hang LOST posters in a 5 block radius. Put posters in plastic protectors with open side down to withstand rain and elements. Also give lost posters to every neighbor in 2-3 block radius as too many people just assume when they see a cat that it is a stray - if they know you are looking for your cat they will be extra vigilant and want to help. Ask them to take a photo of any cats they see in your area and to monitor their Ring cameras. DO NOT GIVE UP! It could take days, weeks or months but your cat is out there and you must keep up the search and spread the word with posters, speaking with neighbors, social media etc.

They usually don’t venture far. It’s probably scared & hiding near by in bushes or an open garage. Most kitties will stay put in their safe hiding spot. ( if they’re not fixed they can wonder further, depends on circumstances) Ask neighbors to check their sheds, decks, garages. They usually venture out at night after 24-48hrs when they start getting hungry. The “witching” hour when they come out is 3am. If you see your pet, don’t try to grab it, it’s still on survival mode and will run. Just sit down maybe with some treats and let your pet come to you. (Remember, never put the litterbox outside. Other cats will mark it & scare your cat away. Just in case, also set some humane traps near by, hide them in the bushes where your pet might hide. Good luck & don’t lose hope. Pray to St Anthony, he hasn’t let me down. 🙏🏻🐾
