Jessica Anderson so defensive! You wouldn't have lost your no breed domestic longhair had you not ALLOWED it to free roam. You KNEW he occassionally wanders off, so again, why let him roam loose??? "He rarely ventures out of our yard and when he does, it's no more than another hse distance away." Sorry, but I do feel bad for that cat, not so much you. Doesn't matter how old are young you are, you LET this happen.

Some of this may be repetitions, but may have more that will also help.... Once an indoor (or outdoor) cat is lost they will hunker down and stay hidden. He is hopefully still close by and staying hunkered down. The best times to look for him are late at night and early morning hours when it’s dark and quiet outside. Only one or two people looking and no small children. The main thing is calmness and soft voices when looking for him. Take a flashlight and gently call for him and watch for his eye shine. You can also gently shake a bag of cat food or treats if he knows that sound. Check in trees, on rooftops, fencetops, under bushes, cars, porches, decks, check your garage really well and any sheds or outbuildings and especially ask your neighbors to do the same. He may be stuck in someone's shed or garage. If safe to do so, leave a door/garage door/window cracked open so he can get back inside during the night. I've heard of a number of cats that just come back in on their own if the door is cracked open for them. You can put a scent item outside that he will recognize but another cat or predator won’t (blanket, cat bed, clothing). Litter boxes and food can attract coyotes and other cats so don't put those out. They will keep your kitty away. Report him as missing at your local Humane Society and/or Animal Control and go there often to look for him. Also report him as missing on the Lost My Kitty website. They can help contact local vets and rescue agencies for you. These tips are good for indoor/outdoor cats too. Best wishes on finding your kitty. ❤️

Maybe sit on the porch or stairs and very softly call for your kitty. - Set up a scent station at home or the last known location using your unwashed clothing, their bedding, or items that smell like home. - If it's safe to do so, leave a door or window cracked open while you're home—many cats return silently when things are quiet and calm. - Avoid leaving litter outside. This can attract predators or other cats that might chase your cat away from the area. - Consider setting a humane trap—especially if you're seeing your cat or have a suspected hiding spot. Local shelters or rescues can often loan traps and help with setup. - Post to local lost & found pet groups, neighborhood apps (like Nextdoor), Facebook community groups, and bulletin boards. Include a recent photo, your contact info, and where/when your cat was last seen. - Visit local shelters and animal control in person frequently, and file a lost pet report. Cats are sometimes misidentified or mislabeled. - If your cat is microchipped, make sure your contact info is current and report them as missing to the microchip company. 🏠 If Lost Close to Home: - Ask nearby neighbors to check garages, sheds, porches, crawlspaces, and under decks. Cats often slip into tight spots and stay silent. - Search quietly at dusk, dawn, or late at night using a flashlight. Don't search eith small children. Check under cars, bushes, decks, and along fences, and in trees near the trunk. Look for eye reflection (eyeshine). - Keep your home calm and inviting—many cats return when the environment feels safe and familiar again. 📍 If Lost Away from Home: - Set up a scent station at the last known location with familiar-smelling items. Cats often stay nearby and hide until they feel safe enough to come out. - Don’t search too widely or bring large groups—too much activity can keep a cat in hiding longer. - If you’ve had sightings or suspect they’re nearby, use a trap or feeding station. It may take time for a frightened cat to build up the courage to return. ❤️ Lost cats often remain close and hidden for days, even weeks. Many return quietly once things feel calm and safe again. If this was a Siberian, which it isn't, they would have signed a contract with the breeder to never let it be loose outside. Why did they have it out there with no harness and leash on especially when they already know it leaves the yard?
