I spoke with a woman who found that her cat was locked in a home that was for sale for 3 days. The real estate agent accidentally shut the door on the cat. She would not have known this unless she was going around the neighborhood and checking houses. Another person found their cat meowing late at night by calling its name. It was trapped in a neighbor's shed. Another cat was trapped in a neighbor's RV. In addition to checking during the DAY, it's good to go LATE At NIGHT (11pm onwards) so that you can hear them meowing if they are stuck somewhere. It's very important to go door-to-door (with flyers in hand) so that you can show it to your neighbors. Sending positive thoughts your way for you to find your cat! 💕🐱💕

A woman shared with me that she got her indoor-only cat back by hanging out in the garage at night and casually talking with her partner. The garage door was open about 10 inches to let the cat inside and it wandered in on its own. They also opened the door leading from the garage into the house. This is the perfect play-it-cool technique that indoor cats respond really well to. Oftentimes, because they're in survival mode, they will go into fear mode and run away from us if we spot them or try to pursue them. Even if we are calling their name, it can scare them as they are hiding from predators. However, if you can talk normally late at night & wait for them to come to you, it can be the best remedy! I also spoke with another lady, whose indoor-only cat escaped from the window. They spotted their cat outside, but it got spooked when they went after it, and it jumped over their fence. Then, they left the window that the cat exited from open & placed canned tuna inside the room. The cat came home at 3 AM through the window and while it was eating its food, they shut the window.

If your cat is an indoor cat, it is most likely going to be very near the spot where it exited and in hiding. Most indoor only cats are found within 2.5 houses of the house they escaped from. Indoor only cats will be hiding out during the day and typically come out at night when it's dark and quiet as they feel more safe. The best thing to do is to talk to your neighbors during the day to see if they have seen your cat. Do not rely on social media. The best way to find your cat is on foot by talking to people during the day and looking outside very LATE at night. See if your neighbors can leave their garages and sheds open for a few hours. If your cat is inside, your cat may not come out right away once the doors are opened. This is because when cats are in survival mode, they typically do not act normal. You can also print mini flyers and attach them to your neighbors' doors if they are not home. You can use painter's tape so that it is easy for the homeowner to remove. Offer a reward even if it's a small amount. It incentivizes people & neighborhood kids to look. Post neon signs/posters. Talk to your mail carrier. Post on Nextdoor & Neighbors by Ring App. It alerts neighbors in a 2-3 mile radius. You do not need to own a ring camera to post on Neighbors by Ring. Please make sure that your cat has a way to get back into your house 24/7. You want to leave open a garage door (including the door that goes from the garage into the house), sliding glass door, or window that they exited from as well as some of your recently worn clothing and/or shoes outside of the entry way. Your scent will attract your cat back to you. ***Do NOT put your cat's litter box outside as it can attract predators.*** It's VERY important that you look for your cat late at night. Between 11pm to 5am are ideal times to find a missing indoor only cat. 3 AM is the best time to find a cat as this is the time they become most active and responsive. Shake a bag of their favorite treats while CALMLY talking (in a normal voice) to your cat. Make sure that you pause after calling to see if you can hear your cat meowing. Use a flashlight and look for the glow of their eyes. Check up trees as well. It is very common for an indoor-only cat not to make any sounds. This is because, in their mind, if they made a sound it would give up their hiding place. Indoor-only cats are very frightened outdoors and will only come out when they feel safe. You may have to trap your cat as they will be in survival mode (sometimes they start acting a bit feral) and will not act the same way that they do in the house. Suzette Stephenson Thanks for sharing your advice. 🙏😊 Cat rescue experts now recommend NOT putting the litter box outside. This is because it can attract aggressive Tom cats and other predators (dogs, coyotes etc), which can chase the cat that you are trying to find away. The reason that cats bury their waste is so that they cover up their scent to predators. Instead, it is now recommended to put some of the owner's unlaundered clothing (such as dirty socks) & their shoes outside the door the cat exited from. The owner's scent will safely attract their cat back home. 🙏
