My cat, Prince, went missing the same day my mom past (July 4) — which feels synchronistic. He came into my life six years ago and was originally my mom's cat, but as her mobility declined, his loving desire to be around people (and underfoot) wasn't conducive to her well-being. Prince and I moved to Barre five years ago, and he's been a free-range cat for the last three, usually sticking to my yard, my neighbors' yard, or further down Mechanic St. He has his own window/door with unfettered access. After losing multiple collars within the first two days of wearing each one, I stopped putting them on him. Prince is also very friendly, and neighbors have told me he'll often want to come in and say hello. Purrhaps sometime between July 3–4 (or more recently), he graced your porch, and because he wasn't wearing a collar, you may have mistaken him for a stray and brought him in for safety. Or maybe you just saw him passing through.
