Kylie Walker this was Darebin council, 10 years ago. The ranger, who provided the traps and collected the cat family, said that she wouldn't work for a shelter or council that euthanised as a first response. I also followed their progress by phone and FB almost daily ... I fed them for 2 months before deciding to rehome them, so I was already attached. (We already had a fairly territorial cat, and realised that if we kept them, none of them would be very happy). When they were in the cages, I sang quietly to them until they fell asleep.

Marci Bach Maribyrnong council rangers don’t do that, they take the traps to LDH, bcos that’s who is contracted to handle stray animals for Maribyrnong.( & many other councils).

Kylie Walker to your 2nd question first, I was commenting on someone else's post, so I don't know the answer. To your more recent question from experience, yes the cats do howl briefly when trapped, But they don't have to go to a shelter. When we moved, we found a mother cat with 4 kittens abandoned by the previous resident. The ranger checked for a microchip and found none, so they went to a foster home for abandoned queens and kittens. From there, they all found forever homes.

The council can provide a humane trap and check for a microchip.
