LOST CAT OPEN DOOR Scatter the contents of your hoover bag around the outside boundary of your home - they can scent their way home from miles away, using the familiar smell of your home. If putting out clothing make sure that it hasn’t been washed so that it smells of “you”. Going out late at night/ early morning when it is quieter and less noise distraction around will make it easier for you to hear each other’s calls. If you are calling for him make sure you do this as you walk towards your home not away from it so that if he follows the direction of your voice you’re leading him home, not further away. Also ask any neighbours to check their sheds/ outbuildings in case he’s been inquisitive and got trapped inside somewhere. If he is an indoor cat he is likely scared and hiding somewhere very close by - look under/behind any items/objects that he may be seeking shelter from - under bushes, behind bins etc. when searching at night take a torch - the light from its beam will reflect in his eyes and you will be able to spot him even if he doesn’t respond to your calls. Put up posters in all surrounding streets and inform the microchip company that he is missing.Put out water, and some of YOUR dirty clothes (dirty socks are nice and stinky)/blankets (dry in dryer first to enhance smell). Depending on the weather, you might want to put out a plastic tub with straw for shelter. Go out every morning and evening walking (folks seem successful around 10:30 p.m., but don't go alone) with food/treats in bowl rattling it, calling your cats name. Cats are often hiding within a 5-house radius. Do NOT give up. There was a cat a week or so ago, they went out every night for 5 nights, finally on the 5th night, they heard it's meow, it was trapped in a neighbor's shed. Another was hiding in a tree from the neighbor's dogs. Check buildings, bushes, trees, and storm drains around your house. Also in the house/garage, keep all doors/closets OPEN in case it's hiding in the house. If you can, leave door cracked open from which cat would most likely sneak back in during the night. If desperate, sprinkle your urine near the cracked door as stronger scent guidance. Worked for us!

LOOK AT the Facebook page called lost and found pets of Salem oregon. On July 31st there was a cat sighting off Sunnyside Road in Salem. Picture looks very similar

Follow instructions above, but also post on Nextdoor to reach the many local people who don’t use Facebook. Nextdoor helped friends and us locate our missing pets when no other site did. When you go out with a flashlight early in the morning, look in bushes, culverts, and way up in trees. One of our hid way up in a tree for 2 1/2 days in winter storms after being chased by a dog or coyote. Best of luck.

Knock on neighbours doors and put out flyers everywhere. Do offer rewards. Also go out in the night. You can hear him better then. Check the pounds too. Airtags on collars help greatly.

The best thing to do is to talk to neighbors during the day to see if they have seen your cat. Do not rely on social media. The best way to find your cat is on foot by talking to people during the day and looking outside very LATE at night. See if your neighbors can leave their garages and sheds open for a few hours. If your cat is inside, your cat may not come out right away once the doors are opened. This is because when cats are in survival mode, they typically do not act normal. You can also print mini flyers and attach them to your neighbors' doors if they are not home. You can use painter's tape so that it is easy for the homeowner to remove. Offer a reward even if it's a small amount. It incentivizes people & neighborhood kids to look. Post neon signs/posters. Talk to your mail carrier. Post on Nextdoor & Ring App. It alerts neighbors in a 2-3 mile radius. Please make sure that your cat has a way to get back into your house 24/7. You want to leave open a garage door (including the door that goes from the garage into the house) sliding glass door, or window that they exited from as well as some of your recently worn clothing and/or shoes outside of the entry way. Your scent will attract your cat back to you. ***Do NOT put your cat's litter box outside as it can attract predators.*** It's VERY important that you look for your cat late at night. Between 11pm to 5am are ideal times to find a missing indoor only cat. 3 AM is the best time to find a cat as this is the time they become most active and responsive. Shake a bag of their favorite treats while CALMLY talking (in a normal voice) to your cat. Make sure that you pause after calling to see if you can hear your cat meowing. Use a flashlight and look for the glow of their eyes. Check up trees as well. Indoor only cats are very frightened outdoors and will only come out when they feel safe. You may have to trap your cat as they will be in survival mode (sometimes they start acting a bit feral) and will not act the same way that they do in the house.
