Update... I already contacted AZGFD about the situation. They agreed that taking him away from there was the right thing, given the dangerous surroundings. They gave me instructions on how to take him to a known desert tortoise location in that area, away from the traffic. Thank you everyone for your help with this shell baby! ❤️🐢

State Protection: The Sonoran desert tortoise is protected under Arizona state law. It is illegal to take wild tortoises out of their natural habitat, and captive ones can never be released back into the wild due to disease transmission risks It's probably NOT a pet. I would release it back where you found it. You sound like a very good hearted person and the tortoise 🐢 needs to stay in the wild.

Definitely a desert tortoise, looks a lot like my little Timmy. This one does not look 10 yr old though, my Timmy is almost 3yrs and is only two or maybe 3 times bigger than this little guys.

You should put it back in the same direction that it was trying to walk just help it cross the street they get disorientated and will die if they are not within their location and it is a federally protected and there's plenty of them all over that area. There's a big population I live off that road

It was hustling down Rincon Knoll Loop toward a very busy Mary Ann Cleveland Way. Even if it is wild, I wasn't going to allow it to wonder into traffic. We already reported it to AZGFD.
