Message from Owner

Jasper was seen this morning, but I feel like he might have gotten out somehow because I also feed the outside cats around the neighborhood. He’s got a collar with a bell on it.. he’s very vocal. He loves to meow a lot.. he’s very special to me and I seriously need him back home.

Time is of the essence act immediately Please read this and reread it This is a lengthy read, but one that’s truly worth revisiting with an open heart. As a devoted cat owner with years of experience in trapping, I completely understand the heartbreak that comes with losing a beloved feline. This overwhelming situation can feel devastating, but I want to share some heartfelt, practical tips that I've gathered from veterinarians and fellow trappers to help you through this difficult time. First and foremost, act quickly. Cats are natural hiders and often stay close to home. Begin your search by thoroughly checking your surroundings—quiet spots like under porches, in garages, or amidst dense bushes. The late-night hours are especially effective; as the world quiets down, you can listen more carefully for your cat’s familiar sounds. Gently calling their name in a soft, soothing voice might surprise you when they come out to find you. Don’t forget to reach out to your neighbors. Let them know your cat is missing and kindly ask if they can check their security cameras for clues. Creating bright, eye-catching flyers with your cat’s photo and distinctive features make sure you out them in PLASTIC covering then distributing them around your neighborhood and on community boards, can greatly increase your chances of bringing your furry friend home. Laminating these flyers helps keep them intact, even in bad weather. Another vital step is obtaining traps from your local shelter—many offer them free of charge or with a refundable deposit. Place these traps near your home, baited with strong-smelling foods like tuna or chicken. Adding a sprinkle of catnip can make them even more tempting. For added comfort, consider leaving a piece of your clothing or a blanket with your scent nearby; your cat might be drawn back by your familiar smell. Please be diligent in watching the traps!! Other animals or wildlife might accidentally get trapped, and if that happens, you’ll need to release them. It’s wise to keep a close eye on the traps, especially if you keep them around your home. Regularly check and refresh the bait as needed, especially with changing weather conditions. Never underestimate the power of social media—post about your missing cat in local Facebook groups, Twitter, and Nextdoor. These platforms can reach large audiences and may lead to a heartfelt sighting. Finally, make it a point to visit local shelters in person whenever possible. Providing a detailed description and photo to the staff can help them recognize your cat. Most importantly, don’t lose hope. Remember that your cat is searching for you just as fiercely as you’re searching for your cherished companion.

It might be worth trying to trap him. Use a nice smelly bait like sardines or tuna or KFC chicken in a paper plate or on a tortilla you place at the back of the trap. Drop a few small pieces of bait at the front and on the floor of the trap to lead him to the back of the trap. Drape a towel on top of the trap so the cat can see out of both ends. Place the trap near some bushes on perimeter of yard or next to house… not out in the open… cats walk along sides of things. Best to position it so you can see and/or hear if it was sprung from inside your house. You can put a sheet of newspaper, cardboard or a puppy pad on the floor of the cage. If you’ve been leaving food out and it’s being eaten, don’t leave food out before the time you want to trap him as you want him to be hungry. Have a sheet or large towel handy to cover the entire trap as soon as he goes in it as it calms them down right away. Never leave it outside or set when you are not home or awake to keep an eye on it and can listen for when an animal goes in it. PAWS, 7282 N Cherryvale Mall Dr, has traps you can rent for a $25 refundable fee. I think they only take cash. They are open M &T 11-3, closed Wed & Sun, Th-Sat 11-3. 815-299-7297. Farm and Fleet has Havahart traps that are pretty good. The really cheap ones from Harbor Freight may not work very well. Tomahawk (livetrap.com) makes excellent traps. Order directly from them.

Leave open a garage door, sliding patio door, window, etc. Cats will often hide during the day and move under the cover of darkness and sneak back into the house. Several cats have returned to their owners this way recently. It is effective. Also, keep walking your neighborhood, they usually don’t go very far but can be scared and hiding. Check under decks, bushes, or just sit quietly for hours to see if you see or hear your cat. See if any neighbors have Ring/doorbell cameras or other cameras and ask them to check their footage to see if they see your cat. Also think about setting a humane trap. A lot of shelters or animal rescue groups have them to loan. Cover the trap with a blanket or something so it doesn’t look like a trap. Bait the trap with a food your cat loves. You have to constantly check the trap though. You might catch a wild animal and that is super stressful for the animal (just release it asap), plus, depending on the weather, extreme cold or heat, it can be dangerous. But if you can check a trap every hour or put a camera on it, it is a good way to catch your cat. You may have to camouflage the trap a bit with a blanket or tree branches. Traps can look scary.

** Time is of the essence, for finding your lost cat. ** Your cat is probably nearby. Indoor cats usually find a hiding spot very quickly, and very close to where they escaped. Look up in the trees, and check under everything in YOUR YARD first… under decks, bushes, wood piles and sheds. Then check your neighbors yards. The best time to find your cat is at night, with a flashlight, when their eyes glow back at you. ***If your cat is scared, it will not respond to you calling him/her, so you'll have to use your eyes instead of your ears. *** ***When inside cats are suddenly outside, they can go into "survival mode,” and their entire personality changes.*** They, generally, will NOT wander. At least, not at first. (Unless they are not neutered/spayed.) Make sure to leave food and fresh water outside, in case they come out of hiding at night. Canned tuna (packed in oil) is nice and smelly. Also, a piece of your "worn" clothing, with your scent on it left outside, along with their bedding, with their scent on it, will definitely help. And, if you have a container or bag of treats that they really like.. shake it outside for your cat to hear. Also, leave your garage door or a window open a few inches in case it comes back at night. (5-7 inches.) [A special consideration in the cold weather, is to please CHECK UNDER THE HOOD of your vehicle! Oftentimes, a cat, especially an indoor only one, will seek out shelter or warmth in the engine area of your car. Do not start your vehicle, until you’ve checked! It is oftentimes fatal to your feline!] Hoping you find your cat very soon! ♥️ MS🐈
