THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND PEOPLE WHO KEEP YOUR PET: PROFILE 1: THE "KEEPSIE" (Finder-Keeper) Psychology: These are people who convince themselves they’re doing the right thing by keeping a found pet. Often believe “finders keepers” or that they’re a “better” owner They may even rationalize that they “rescued” your pet — especially if your dog looked scared, dirty, or was outside alone. Motivations: Emotional attachment: “My kids love this dog now.” Hero syndrome: “I saved it.” Avoiding hassle: “I don’t want to get involved with animal control.” Fear of losing something they now like. What Messaging Works on Them: Best tactics: “No questions asked” reward Make it easy — offer to meet anywhere, anytime No questions asked. 🐾 There Are Two Types of Lost Pet Flyers: 1. Community-Oriented Flyer (No Reward) ✅ Best for: General public, animal lovers, helpful neighbors ✅ Goal: Spread awareness, recruit people who are already inclined to help ✅ Effective design: “LOST DOG” or “FOUND DOG” large and bold Clear photo Date & location Contact info ✅ Works because: The target audience cares already. 2. Bounty/Reward Flyer (With AMOUNT!) ✅ Best for: opportunists, people who have or saw the pet but didn’t act ✅ Goal: Motivate action from people who need a reason (money) to do the right thing ✅ Effective design: "$2-500 REWARD with the amount as the biggest text NOT LOST DOG NOT HAVE YOU SEEN ME Pet photo Large contact info ✅ Works because: What's in it for them.. It turns a flyer into a cash incentive.

Common Types of Lost Pet Owners Type 1: THE PASSIVE OWNER ▪️Typical level of search effort: Low. ▪️Passive owners tend to wait. Example: "My dog got out. Let me know if you see it." This type of owner: Does very little to look for their pet. Low sense of urgency. Expects the dog to return home or someone else to bring the dog back. Let’s the community do the work instead of organizing a search. Provides little or no useful information. May post once or twice a day, then stops posting after 2–3 days if the dog hasn't returned. May not follow up on sightings or recommendations. Slow to respond or no response in the comment section. Type 2: THE PANICKED OWNER Typical level of search effort: Emotional, low organization. ▪️Panicked owners care deeply but need direction. Some are teachable and will quickly change course with instruction. Others will continue with what eases their feelings, even if the tactics are not effective. Oftentimes have anxiety. Example: "My dog is missing! Please help! I'm freaking out!" This type of owner: Likely overwhelmed Emotional panic rather than strategic execution. Forgot to include the location. Forgot to include a picture. Forgot contact information. Doesn't know where to start. Loses valuable time during the critical first 24–72 hours because every decision is made in panic/ fight or flight. Type 3: THE ORGANIZED RECOVERY OWNER Typical level of search effort: Very high. Logical, organized, prioritizes which methods are first and quickly executes search tactics. ▪️Organized owners immediately shift into problem-solving mode and throw every available resource at recovering their pet. These owners operate much like law enforcement and search and rescue teams. Example: They have a large clear photo of their pet Reward $200 Lost Shih Tzu 75th Ave & Union Hills Phoenix 2-year-old male Red collar Microchipped Neutered Friendly Last seen at 3:15 PM June 1st 2026. Missing 24 hours What we have done: Nextdoor Ring Neighbors Petco Love Lost PawBoost Multiple Facebook groups Flyers up Please call or text 24/7 immediately with any sighting: (Phone Number) This type of owner: Organized from the start Understands that time matters. Has already started a coordinated recovery effort. Makes it easy for strangers to help. Responds quickly to sightings. Continues posting updates. Will usually print flyers, expand the search radius, and keep searching until there's an outcome. Uses every available resource instead of waiting for the phone to ring. Some owners start off as type 2 and move into type 3 as the search continues.

Next door AND Neighbors by ring (you don't need the ring camera for this app- it's not the Ring app) These #1 way to reach people in the immediate vicinity. Please hurry! And most likely the owners or the person that found your dog. Dogs are usually within 1 to 3 mi of their home. If you are an owner looking for your pet you also should be on these two apps. IMMEDIATELY! Most people that find a pet post them on their first! You need to be on BOTH!! THEY HAVE A 75% RETURN RATE. NOTHING ELSE IS THAT HIGH. FOR QUICK RESULTS POST THREE TIMES A DAY OR EVERY 4 HOURS. AND ALSO MAJOR IMPORTANT COMMENT EVERY 20 TO 30 MINUTES ON YOUR POST FOR A DAY OR TWO.

Day-One Response The first 48 (Upstream Assistance) This is the early intervention phase—from the moment a pet goes missing up to 48 hours. This phase focuses on fast action and prevention: Getting the owner immediate, correct suggestions for their pet and for their area. Heavy coverage of the 1-mile search radius immediately Considering the breed and the neighborhood and which tactics work best based on that. Looking at what are the biggest risk factors for this pet right now and in the next 2 hours? Coyotes, cars, heat, being stolen etc. Using the fastest most successful methods to reach that one mile search radius immediately. It's usually next door and neighbors by ring apps because they reach the people in the one-mile search radius and you can reach 50 people within a few minutes with one post.💪 The purpose of upstream assistance is to recover the pet BEFORE the situation expands or becomes harder to trace. When this phase is done effectively, many cases are resolved before they ever become long-term missing pets. If the pet is not found- the owners move into phase 2 tactics which are much more time consuming... And often less effective. Long-Term Recovery (Downstream Assistance) This is the extended search phase—when a pet has been missing 3 to 4 days or more and has likely moved out of the 1 mi search radius or entered systems like shelters or rescues. This phase focuses on investigation. Daily shelter searches in person Going through Lost Pet websites to see if the pet has been posted Trying to identify matches on five or six Lost Pet websites and 10 to 15 Lost Pet groups on Facebook 👎 It's very tedious. Having to also search if the pet was taken in by a foster or a rescue. Piecing together information after time has passed. This becomes necessary when the early response window was missed or the pet was not recovered quickly.

There are rescue workers across the valley working the lost dog cases right now from the 4th of July runaways. It's the busiest day of the year and it leads on for weeks!!!!! Many pets will be put to sleep at the County shelter because owners don't find them in time. It's the owner's responsibility to put clear information in their post so that rescue volunteers can help you find your own pet. The valley is 10,000 square miles. That's worse than a needle and a haystack. For this reason you need to put in the VERY 1ST LINE A reward with the amount (if it's urgent to you that you find your dog safely. ) Then the major cross streets and your city. NOT YOUR LITTLE SIDE NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS. AFTER THAT YOU PUT YOUR INFO ON YOUR DOG. Then your contact information which is hopefully a phone number because if your dog is running in the street about to get hit by a car you don't want to get an email the next morning. 😕
