Copied and combined advice from lost-cat recovery groups and successful reunions, and thought it might help others in our community: 🐱 Lost Indoor Cat Rescue Tips If your indoor cat has escaped and isn’t familiar with the outdoors, there’s a very good chance he or she is hiding close to home—often in your yard or an immediate neighbor’s yard. When indoor cats get outside, they usually become frightened and make a beeline for the nearest cover. They often hide silently and may stay in the exact same spot for days. 🏡 Start Close to Home Thoroughly check: • Under decks, porches, and crawl spaces • Thick bushes and shrubs • Open sheds, garages, and barns • Wood piles and window wells • Under parked vehicles, wheel wells, and engine compartments Tip: Ask neighbors for permission to thoroughly check their yards and outbuildings yourself. A frightened cat won't usually come out for a stranger. Crack a Window Open If safe to do so, crack open a window or screen door near the ground level (especially in a room your cat frequented). The familiar smell of the inside of their home wafting out into the yard is a powerful beacon that tells a disoriented, hiding cat exactly where safety is. 👃 Use Familiar Scents (The Safe Way) Put outside: • Your cat’s bedding or favorite blanket • Worn clothing (T-shirts, pillowcases) that smells like you Scent Tip: If possible, hang these clothes up high (on a clothesline, deck railing, or low branch) rather than leaving them flat on the ground. This allows the breeze to catch your scent and carry it much further through the neighborhood. • Vacuum dust from your home (it contains familiar scents and fur) ⚠️ Note: Avoid putting out a dirty litter box. While popular advice, the scent can actually attract predators or territorial neighborhood cats, scaring your missing cat away. 🥩 Food and Water • Place smelly food (tuna, sardines, wet food) and a bowl of water outside only while actively monitoring the area during the day. • Do not leave food or water out unattended overnight. It attracts raccoons, skunks, and strays that will terrify your cat and keep them from coming home. 🌙 Search at Night (Crucial!) • Many lost cats only become active after dark when the world gets quiet. • Go out late at night with a strong flashlight. Hold the light at eye level and scan slowly—a cat’s eyes will reflect brightly in the beam. • Sit quietly, call their name calmly, and shake a treat bag. Be patient; a terrified cat might watch you for a long time before making a sound. 🌲 Look Up (Trees) • If a cat is chased or startled, they may sprint straight up a tree and get too terrified to climb back down. • Scan High: Search the branches at night with a flashlight to catch their eye-reflection. They can sit silently 30+ feet up and blend right in. • The Ladder Trick: Securely prop a ladder against the tree trunk and leave it there. It acts as a ramp for them to walk down when it gets quiet. • Who to Call: Fire departments rarely help, but local tree service/arborist companies have the right gear and are usually glad to assist. You can also search CatInATreeRescue.com for a directory of local tree climbers. 📷 Use Tech & Cameras • Direct your Ring, security, or motion-activated trail cameras toward the house exits and where you left the scent items. • Many owners discover their cat is visiting the porch between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM without them ever knowing it. 🪤 Consider a Humane Trap If your cat has been missing more than a day or two, a humane trap is often the most effective tool. You can buy them at hardware stores or borrow them from local rescues/animal control. • Trap tips: Line the bottom with a familiar-smelling towel (but keep fabric clear of the trip plate). Cover the top and sides with a blanket so it feels like a safe, dark tunnel. Check it frequently. Check the trap frequently—every 30 to 60 minutes if possible, and at least every 2 hours—to keep him safe from extreme weather, distress, or predators, and to quickly release any unintended local wildlife. 🗣️ Get the Word Out • Post on Facebook, Nextdoor, Ring, and local lost pet groups. • Contact local animal control, shelters, rescues, and vets with a photo. • Make neon flyers: Use bright neon poster board. Keep the text massive (e.g., "LOST BLACK CAT" and your phone number) so drivers can read it in 3 seconds. • Ensure your cat’s microchip information is up to date. ❤️ Don’t Give Up Too Soon! Do not assume the worst. Many missing indoor cats are found days, weeks, or even months later because their owners stayed persistent. S/N: Cats and dogs tend to stay close to home. Please have your pets spayed/neutered and microchipped if you haven’t already. It’s the best way to ensure a happy reunion if the unexpected happens!

Drag scent trails… He may be hiding under a porch, a shed, or a car, behind bushes, or in a wooded area. Go out late at night with a flashlight that might reflect against his eyes, and call him gently. Or shake a bag of treats, sometimes better than your voice to attract a cat that’s scared. Create scent trails on the grass and ground leading up to your home (or to a trap, ideally monitored with a trail cam, so you can respond quickly when the cat is in the trap). Get a towel and rub it with your dirty laundry, blankets, socks, or anything else with the scent of home. (Do not use kitty litter.) Tie a rope to the towel and drag it from the areas where you think the cat might be, creating scent trails leading to your house (or the trap). You won’t smell the scent on the towel or the ground, but the cat will. (If you use a trap, load it with a little cat food, chicken or tuna, enough to attract the cat from the trail that leads up to it. Rely on the scent trails to get your cat to the trap.) Rain and snow will wash away the scent trails, so you’ll have to drag again afterwards. Also, renew the trails every couple days. Try to remain patient and hopeful. Some cats only show up after many days or even weeks. Important: . Never leave a trap unattended, always keep an eye on it, checking it every 1/2 hour in person or with a trail cam. Position the trap close to where the cat escaped or was last seen. . Trail cam photos and videos are marked with time stamps, helpful to know if and when the cat shows up but doesn’t go into the trap. . Post flyers in the area with a picture of your cat and your contact information. . Even if you don’t have a trap or a trail cam, scent trails leading to your home can work.

Scent drag trails all over your yard with clothes, blankets, towels, socks etc ASAP. I used to admin a few Lost/Found Cat pages. Put items of clothes, blankets, gym bag outside with both your scents on them ideally in the spot of exit/escape. Empty the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag or canister outside (it will have familiar scents). Check your & neighbor’s swimming pools, sheds, garages, porches, decks, dry docked boats, under crawl spaces, & in abandoned or empty homes (especially ones up 4 sale - could’ve gone in during a showing or open house), and look in bushes & up in trees & roof lines with a flashlight. Their eyes will glow when you shine the light on them. Check with delivery companies (parcel, furniture, moving companies etc) that may have been in your neighborhood. Cats are curious and have been known to jump in delivery trucks when doors are left open during deliveries. They will also seek warmth in wheel wells & automobile engines when the temperatures get cooler. If you have a drone with camera, use it to scan the neighborhood, yards, wooded areas. Contact local vets, animal shelters, & animal control. Post pics on all social media pages relevant to town where cat went missing. Inform your postman/woman delivering your mail & give them a flyer. Put a sign on your mailbox if possible. Ask your favorite pizza place to include fliers with their pizza boxes. Keep calling your cat around your neighborhood as often as you can especially early morning and at dusk when it’s quieter so they’ll hear your familiar voice & know they’re close to home. Shake food & treat bag, tap can opener on can of food when you search. Some cats will seek out food supply from fast food chains & restaurant & hotel dumpsters. Check those dumpsters in your area as well as surrounding areas. If you’re not absolutely sure he/she got out: Check behind appliances, in dresser drawers, in closets, shelving, cabinets, boxes, storage bins, luggage/suit cases, holes in walls, attics, basements, crawl spaces & rafters in ceiling; check your mattresses & the lining of your sofas, recliners, & upholstered furniture. From Stella Dan Montuori (Dog & Drone lost pet search): Find nearest water source and make a trail home don’t just leave stuff on porch. Dragging a blanket or clothes on the ground leaves a constant scent trail. Cut blanket or clothes into strips 3” by 12”inches and hang so bottom is touching or close to touching ground.Leave every 20 yards or so a teaspoon of kitty litter every 20/30 yards works also. I did this and cat showed up 1 hr later to the surprise of her skeptical owner .I always use cameras and never had a predator follow kitty litter. From rescuer Julia Toomey: Keep calling, your cat is most likely nearby even if he doesn't come to your calls, they can hear you. They are just scared. Don't stop calling them every day around the clock. Put litter box out so their scent is around (caution in suburbs where predators may be attracted). Talk to neighbors and inform them of his situation. Tell them to call you right away if they see him. Even though they are your cat, once outside they become very scared and may not come to you. Call a rescue group ASAP to see if they can let you borrow a trap. Leave then water and food unless you are trapping him, then the food goes in the trap. Do not act frantic or stressed around them or when you call them, they will pick up on your stress and it will make things worse and they may not come to you. If you see him act as calmly as you can, act like nothing is going on, like your weeding the ground or something and let him come to you and then grab him. Cats will chase a laser toy & is a great way to lead them safely indoors. The more you chase him the more he will run, it's in a cats nature. Just use soft tones with him and he will eventually come to you, be patient. He may not come out until it's dark. You could also leave your door open and see if he will run in but don't stand by the door, it will make him more hesitant. Right now he is in fight or flight mode because he is outside so be gentle. I would definitely call a rescue group RIGHT AWAY so they can help you and also give you advice. Don't wait too long, time is of the essence and you don't want him to leave the area, then things get difficult. If time elapses and he is still not home, make lots of flyers and leave them on peoples doors in a 2 mile radius around where the cat got lost from. These are your best chances for getting your cat back but you have to act quickly. *Tips for trapping* Do not set trap overnight where it can’t be monitored!! Use smelly fish like mackerel or tuna in oil. KFC works well, boneless of course. Cover top & sides of trap (not front where cat enters or back where it can impede traps performance) with a blanket or towel (one that has scent on it if available). Feed outside of trap to get cat used to it, then feed inside trap WITHOUT setting it, then feed inside trap and set once you see cat going in to eat*

Go around late at night calling them with food and flashlight to catch their eyes. Check around your neighborhood under houses and in small places where they may hide. Put stuff out that has yours and their scent on it. Mainly their litter box and sprinkle their used litter around the yard as they'll recognize the smell and it'll deter other animals from coming around. Hang flyers around for people to see. Check shelters and vets daily. Update chip info if they have a chip and its has not been update since a move. Ask neighbors to check in their garages incase they ended up trapped in one and to check their cameras in case they appeared on them to get a sense of direction they could be. I pray you get your baby back safe and soon.
