Donna Andruskiewicz This one looks an outdoor-access cat, but about half of the cats reported each year to Cat Finders as missing are indoor-only cats who pushed out a screen in a window, ran out when a guest or child came in through the door, or pushed out an air conditioner. Not all missing cats were allowed out. And many cats who are allowed out stay very close to home, if neutered, and rarely leave their porch or yard. A cat can go out safely for ten years, fifteen years, say, and never leave the watchful eye of the owner. But sometimes, something happens. It isn't the norm--it is the exception to the everyday. Someone or something interferes with the cat's ability to make it home. Some cats love to be outside and no matter how much stimulation you try to give them indoors, it can't compete with being out in the breeze, the sunshine, the possibility of catching a grasshopper, tree-climbing, the friendly pats of neighbors, friendships with other cats, etc. Would they be safer if they never went outside? Well, yes, unless there is a house fire and they can't get out, or unless the air quality/water quality is poor. But wouldn't we all be safer if we never left our houses? No chance of getting hit by a car, less chance of being shot or catching an illness or getting in a car accident. But what kind of life would that be? In my opinion, the best-case scenario for cats who want to go outside is a catio or fenced yard, or for the humans to supervise cats when they go out. But even then, things can happen. So rather than deciding there is only way to do things--e.g. keeping your cats inside no matter what the cat wants, I think every situation has its nuances, and I would defer to the cat's family to make the best decisions for that cat, since they are the ones who love the cat most.
