When my cat went missing, my vet encouraged me to create a cent trail back to my home for him. He said, put out his favorite toy, bedding, litter box cleaned out or not, preferably all in a fenced in yard or in the garage with the door up just enough for my cat to get in. He also said get a used pillowcase of the owner and some of the owners old shoes to put out with everything. He reminded me that during the day cats will sleep and hide if they never been outside before, but he did say cats are nocturnal and he will come out under darkness. He was right my cat came home at 3:30 in the morning.
