Please give the owner a chance to claim their pet before giving it away to just anyone. Ask for proof of ownership- photos, vet records, how does this animal react to them, etc. Also, any vet or shelter will scan for a microchip. Many fire departments and pet stores also have microchip readers. The number can be plugged into http://petmicrochiplookup.org which will tell you what company it is registered with. That company will reach out to the owner for you.
