Tim Jones Ive heard that too. Then I also read that coyotes can too. But the way I see it, coyotes can smell and locate cats and other prey regardless of anything we do or don't put out. If a slightly soiled cat box will bring a lost kitty home I say do it. And then once the cat is back home, be diligent in keeping them safely inside. Especially if you use flea, tick, anti parasite solutions that is applied to the backs of their heads. I think the smell of the solution negates a cats power of blending in with nature due to the strong smell wafting off them especially the first few days after applying it. Just a theory I have.

Is he eartipped? I think your cat has possibly shown up at 1 of my cat colonies eartipped off I-85 in Greenville. Outdoor pets can end up anywhere and there are people who take outdoor cats and drop them off gosh knows where. I have pics of this fella eating at 1 of my colonies and he showed up there around the time you lost your cat. I do cat rescue and adopt cats out for indoor homes only for this reason. This boy may or may not be yours, but he has definitely been dumped and is getting fed with fresh water daily by me. I’ve been feeding here since 2009 and have seen it all; won’t publicly disclose the location because folks love dumping cats at places they know someone is feeding at.

In addition to many good ideas suggested, please search up in trees, on top of roofs, under buildings/houses with broken or missing foundation vent covers, inside of yours and all neighbors closed garages. These are common places a cat can get into that they need help getting out from. (The ground under foundations is generally too deep for a cat to jump up and get out from a small opening). Never put food nor a cats litter box outside. Both attract wild animals that may harm (or worse) your cat. Go in person as quickly as possible to all local animal shelters to search for your cat. The nice people answering their phones will not know about all the cats dropped off or brought in by Animal Control. Call all local veterinary offices to check if anyone has brought your cat in to be scanned for a microchip or treated for an injury. Ask them to be on the lookout for your cat. Post photos of your cat all around your neighborhood, inside grocery and pet supply stores. Place some of your unwashed clothing outside near your door. This has helped some confused cats find their way back home. Please don't give up on searching for your cat. I'm sure it would much rather be safe inside your home than lost outside.
