Searching at night with a flashlight and calling her name in your normal voice, not yelling it out, is good. Also the eyes will glow if and when the light hits them. Leave out some personal clothing with your or her scent on it. Hope your baby is home inside very soon ❤️

Unlike dogs, who run when frightened, cats tend to hide quietly when scared or injured, often not meowing when called. Cats are often found close by so a physical search is often successful. Most cats are found within about 250 yards radius, indoor-only cats within about 25 yards radius. Please put out kitty’s bed, and item of your clothing/pillow case/etc with your scent. Check with neighbors with photos of your cat because sometimes they get shut in garages or sheds accidentally. In the later evening walk the neighborhood, especially with someone to chat with. Walk a few steps and then stop and listen. If you have a treat pkg that makes crinkle sound, take it with and when you stop, shake the bag or make a crinkle sound. Your cat can hear and recognize familiar sounds like your voice from a good distance and may be able to track you home. Also, call from your porch etc several times a day, while shaking treat bag and/or tapping cat food can with a fork! Check up in trees as cats often seek safety in high places. Use a flashlight at dusk/dark to look for glowing eyes; put up flyers; post to the app Nextdoor and/or Craigslist. Personally check your local shelter every couple days instead of calling, if possible. Animals are brought in constantly. Stray animals are available for adoption after a short time. Plus you know your pet best! They probably look/act differently in a shelter environment. If your pet is microchipped, please make sure your contact info is always up to date. If need be, you can update it even when your pet is missing. And still check shelters in person as microchips can sometimes fall out or travel to other parts of the animal’s body. Put a lost pet sign up in your front yard. This is in case someone finds him and drives through the neighborhood to locate his home. If you have a gate that kitty might have trouble getting back through, keep it open as often as you can until kitty returns. Praying your baby comes home soon.

Search quietly around your house, especially under porches, decks, bushes, cars, stairs, sheds, crawl spaces, and behind outdoor equipment. A frightened cat may stay completely silent even when you call. Use a flashlight, even at night. Shine it slowly under bushes and structures—you may see the cat’s eyes reflecting. Call softly using your normal voice and then stop and listen. Shake treats or open a familiar food can. Avoid yelling or having a large group searching loudly. Leave the door they escaped from accessible if it’s safe, and sit nearby quietly. Cats sometimes sneak back once everything becomes calm. Put something outside that smells strongly like home, such as their bed, blanket, or one of your worn shirts. I would avoid putting the litter box outside unattended because it can attract other animals. Put a small amount of strong-smelling food, such as tuna or wet cat food, near the house—but watch it rather than leaving a large bowl overnight. Ask neighbors to physically look inside garages, sheds, under decks, and beneath vehicles. Cats can slip into a garage and get accidentally locked inside. Search again late tonight and around dawn, when traffic and people are quiet. That is often when a frightened cat feels safer moving. If you spot the cat, don’t run toward it. Sit or crouch down, turn partly sideways, speak softly, and let the cat approach. Even a normally friendly cat may bolt when frightened. If the cat doesn’t return by tomorrow, consider putting a humane live trap near the escape point with wet food inside, and contact local shelters/vets and report the cat missing if microchipped. One important trick: when searching with the flashlight, look within about 3–5 houses of your home first rather than immediately driving around the neighborhood. Escaped indoor cats frequently hide nearby.
