Message from Owner

Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone in Rock Island IL near 16th AVE has seen a Gray and White cat with a lump above his eye, also declawed. He got out at some point today, we have looked all day but with no luck. This is his first time in 6 years getting out and I am an absolute wreck

From another poster on fb This is the info i was given by On The Run Pet Rescue when my dude slipped out. It worked! indoor-only cats and limited outdoor access cats never go far. They go into survival mode and hide in silence. Most of them will not respond when they are in survival mode. 3 AM is the best time to find a missing indoor-only cat. This is the time they become most active and responsive. Sit and quietly call for your kitty. Try to stay low, standing is intimidating to cats. Place some dirty socks, t-shirts, and pillowcases outside. Your scent will attract your kitty. Place the items near the garage door and crack the door enough for her to get in. DO NOT leave food or litter box outside, it can attract predators and aggressive Tomcats. If you do have many stray cats in your area, I would not leave food out at all, for the above-mentioned reason. Because indoor-only cats hide so well, they are not as likely to be killed by a predator. Don’t give up. It can take months to find an indoor-only missing cat. Use a flashlight as late at night as you can to look in trees, under cars, and in bushes. Try to look for the glow of her eyes. The best chance of you being reunited with your cat is to do a methodical search of the area. Most indoor-only cats will be within 160 feet of your home. Survival mode last 5-14 days but can last longer. Once their hunger gets to a maximum, they snap out of it, but this is a dangerous time because they come out of hiding. The majority of cats will try to make a break for home on the 5th night. In addition to posted flyers, make mini flyers and hand them out to your neighbors. Some people don’t pay attention to posted flyers. It’s VERY VERY important that you look for her as late at night as you can. If you have other cats, watch them. If they are spending a lot of time looking out a certain window, that’s a good indication the missing cat is in that area. Wildlife and motion-activated cameras are very helpful! A lot of people are successful at trapping their indoor-only cats. If you decide to trap, you must watch the trap closely, predators can a cat in a trap. Borrow a trap from a local rescue. Post on Nextdoor. Most importantly, if you see her, DO NOT CHASE her. Sit down on the ground, bring a carrier, put it upright, with the door open facing up, and wait for her to come to you. You can have some treats or open tuna to entice her to come to you. But please, do not go after her, you will just chase her away. Secure your other pets and children, and leave a pathway for her to come home. When she will snap out of it, she will try to come home. But if she won’t have a way to get in, she won’t ring the bell. Good luck 🤞

Suggested by others They typically stay within a 160-foot perimeter of home, about four or five houses. Do you have access to a Ring or Blink camera to watch the door she left by? She may try to return during the overnight hours and have no way in. The camera will alert you to her presence. They become more active during the overnight hours when it’s dark and quiet at that time, go out and look under decks, porches, bushes, and anything she can hide in or under. When you’re out looking, talk to her as if she’s still in the house, and listen for a meow in response. Walk slowly so you don’t miss anything. Hang the pillowcase of her favorite person outside so the wind can carry the scent. Pass flyers out door-to-door asking Neighbors to check Ring and security cameras. Ask if anyone who feeds feral cats in the area has a new visitor.

Wanted to share these tips to help find a lost pet. Another social media is Craigslist. Check and post under their community section of lost and found area. Their are some people like the elderly who choose not to be on facebook. Others are taking a break from facebook. Also any lost pets websites for your area. The ones we know of here in Central Iowa are: www.IowaPetAlert.com www.PawBoost.com AHeinz57 Missing Mutts (facebook) AHeinz57 Lost Cats (facebook) Lost Dogs Iowa (facebook) www.NextDoor.com Missing Pets (facebook) Put flyers around and let vet clinics around your area know. Go daily to your local shelters and check. Don't call your shelters. Here in Central Iowa our local HyVee grocery stores, Casey's gas stations,Tractor Supply and Ace Hardware have community bulletin boards for flyers. Those in smaller communities check with your Post Office if you can put a flyer up there as well. Be sure to alert your local mailman, delivery drivers, bus drivers and garbage collectors. They are in the neighborhood daily and may spot your pet. Call your local animal control to see if they have pick him/her up and which shelter they took him/her to. If you have a garage put his/her food, water, and a box (or live trap if you have one) with some of YOUR unwashed t-shirts with your scent on them in it for him/her. Note those who have lost a cat DO NOT put out the litter box as predators will pick up your cat scent and will stay close by waiting for your cat as their meal. Ask your neighbors to check their security cameras, garages, sheds and to look under their deck. If you or you know somebody that has a drone that can help assist you in finding your lost pet also. Our prayers for the family.
