SURVIVAL MODE IN LOST DOGS Many lost dogs, even friendly dogs, will start using their natural instincts in order to survive. When dogs begin to use their natural instincts, they become afraid of things they used to be comfortable with even familiar humans. They become focused on surviving and will perceive everything as a threat, even their owner. This means the dog will run and hide from their owner, even if they normally have a great relationship. When approached or called by an owner or stranger the dog is instinctively fearful and runs away from the “threat”. Chasing the dog increases the dog’s level of fear towards people. The dog will do whatever it needs to do to escape the threat whether that be disappearing into the woods or frantically running into traffic. Lost dogs who aren’t being pursued or pressured will make very wise decisions to survive. Lost dogs that are being pressured will stay in “panic” mode and will make very poor decisions such as running through traffic. When this behavior is being exhibited the dog is said to be in feral, survival or flight mode. When a dog is in Survival mode you need to; -Remain calm. Dogs pick up energy and a nervous or panicked energy will frighten the dog. -Be Silent. DO NOT CALL or YELL for dog to come. The dog in survival mode only hears a loud noise and will run away from it. -Assume a non threatening position. Sit on the ground with your back to the dog, keep the dog in sight using peripheral vision. -Avoid eye contact. Eye contact is intimidating to scared dogs.DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT OR STARE AT DOG -Use slow movements. Fast movements are threatening and will cause the dog to run. DO NOT LUNGE OR TRY TO GRAB THE DOG. -Allow the dog to approach you. Do not try to approach, advancing towards a scared dog will make them run. -Allow ONE person at a time try to work with the dog. A group is threatening, pick one calm person to try and lure dog to them using above methods. -Take your time. Do not rush this process can be lengthy but rushing to secure the dog could scare it more. -Allow the dog to relax and settle in one area. A trap may be utilized to secure scared dog
