🚨 🐾 YOUR DOG IS MISSING - WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW First, don’t panic and don’t flood the area with people searching. A scared or lost dog may behave completely differently than they do at home, even with their owner. 🚫 DO NOT ❌ CHASE, FOLLOW, CALL OUT OR WHISTLE if your dog is spotted. ❌ Send groups of people walking through the woods or searching on foot. ❌ Put food in multiple locations. You want to encourage your dog to return to one predictable spot. ❌ Assume your dog will come to you because they normally do. Fear can override recognition. 📸 SET UP A FEEDING STATION This is one of the most helpful things you can do! 🍗 Use super smelly food that will carry through the air. 👕 Add familiar scent items such as dirty clothes, their bed, blanket or favorite toy. 📷 Always place a camera on the feeding station so you know if your dog is visiting and what time they are coming through. 🤫 Keep the area quiet and give them space. Sitting nearby or constantly checking the station can prevent a frightened dog from approaching. ✅ DO 📍 Report every sighting with the exact location, time and direction of travel. 🏠 Ask neighbors to check cameras, sheds, garages, crawl spaces, decks and fenced yards. 📢 Post flyers and social media posts that clearly say: 🚨 DO NOT CHASE • DO NOT FOLLOW • REPORT SIGHTINGS 🚨 🌲 WHERE ARE THEY LIKELY TO BE? Most lost dogs are looking for somewhere they feel SAFE, QUIET AND HIDDEN. Think wooded areas, creek beds, fields, under decks, behind buildings, abandoned structures and other areas with cover and access to water. 🌙 A frightened dog may move more at night or early in the morning and hide during busy daylight hours. 👀 IF YOU SEE YOUR DOG DO NOT RUN TOWARD THEM. Stop moving. Avoid direct eye contact. Get low if possible and allow your dog to make the decision to approach you. ❤️ THE GOAL IS NOT TO CATCH THEM AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. The goal is to keep them CALM • SAFE • IN ONE AREA long enough to establish a pattern and develop a safe recovery plan.
