Go to the animal care and adoption center at 341 South Birdneck Rd. They can work with you to set up paperwork to foster and dog.

Lori Shaffer Pasternack absolutely the same here in Va Beach. Under VA Code §3.2-6551, keeping a found dog or cat without reporting it is considered theft of property. If you find a pet in Virginia: 🔸 You must report it within 48 hours 🔸 You must notify the local shelter where the animal was found 🔸 You must attempt to locate the rightful owner 🔸 You cannot legally keep, rehome, or “adopt” the pet during the stray-hold period 🔸 Failure to report can result in fines and legal consequences A lost pet isn’t “up for grabs.” They belong to someone — and the law protects that.

I'd be more than happy to adopt this baby if the owner isn't found. 🥰

You have to legally report the dog to animal control as found. Sometimes they will allow you to just send a picture and foster the dog until the parents come forward. If they do. If not, then you usually will have the option to adopt. At least that was my experience in Chesapeake.
