Ashley Schoenradt I don’t think we’re number 42. I think we’re lower than that.

Lisa Jusinski Westbrook Exactly! And if the shelter knows who all three owners are/were, every one of them should at least be investigated— and anyone who abandoned, dumped, or improperly passed this dog along should face actual consequences. Citations, fines, or being legally prohibited from owning another animal—not merely adopting from a shelter or rescue, because online rehoming cannot remain an easy loophole; something with actual consequences. At some point, we have to stop politely asking people to be responsible and start enforcing responsibility. The humans keep walking away without consequences while the dog repeatedly pays the price. This nonsense will never stop until accountability is more than just a word. And as mean as citations and fines may sound, this is how we start helping the shelter and rescues. Without actual action, our shelter and rescues will continue to drown while unchecked online rehoming operates like a consequence free revolving door and the community refuses to take responsibility. New Mexico currently ranks 42nd out of 50 states (a bottom-tier state)for the strength of its animal-protection laws. We cannot keep crying about an animal welfare crisis while refusing to enforce anything that could help prevent it.

This is what happens when owners are not checked out fully. This is also what happens with free adoptions. If you cannot afford the Dog do not get the dog. How are you gonna pay for medical if you can’t even afford to pay for an adoption fee??

Ashley Schoenradt which owner the first one the second one or the third one this is disgusting. None of these owners should have this dog. Too bad the dog can’t get to a rescue. Let’s try to do that. At least they home check. We are recycling dogs from the shelter without doing home checks. And no one start with me that it’s no guarantee no crap but it’s a of a lot better guarantee than not! Free adoptions don’t help either. If you can’t afford the Animal and you get it free you can’t afford medical you shouldn’t get the Animal. I don’t care if it’s free. I don’t care if they’re giving you a free trip to Hawaii. This is a huge problem here we are recycling animals.!! The dog was rehomed by the first owner. They don’t want the Dog the Shelter should contact a good owner for the Dog not the original owner.

Animal shelter should know the owner and should be able to directly contact them to retrieve the dog they got. Unless of course they just don’t want the dog any longer 😏😏😏 common theme in this area. But of course no accountability cause we don’t enforce nothing
