***lost dog tips*** When your dog goes missing: First thing to do is put all your DIRTY laundry out on the back porch. Your dog does not have to be able to get to it, just smell it. The scent can help them find their way back home. Put out food & water and the dog’s bed on the front porch. Then go WALKING, not driving, Especially if your dog is small. Walking leaves a scent trail that can help them find their way back home. If you have another dog, take it walking with you to leave a stronger scent. Please post under lost & found on nextdoor.com with as many searchable keywords as possible. Color, breed, size, temperament, gender, neutered? Chipped? (And edit your post here with keywords) If your dog is chipped, call the microchip company Home Again and be sure all your contact information is current and correct. Put a sign in your front yard, like a for sale sign, that says LOST DOG. Submit lost dog report to LDOT at www.lostdogsoftexas.net for a Free flyer. Submit a single photo so dogs face is large. Crop it down so only the dog is showing. There will be an option when downloading flyer to get a single flyer or 4 to a page. Do a few of both. Submit then look for email and download. Make that flyer your profile pic on all social media Call your city animal shelter and make a lost report. Take smaller flyers and go door to door in neighborhood. Speak to an adult in every house. Take notes for a list of houses to go back to until you speak to an adult. Post larger flyers everywhere. Check flyers posted every day to be sure they are still up. If being taken down, put up more. If you notice a pattern in a certain area where they are removed, but the rest of them are not, it MIGHT mean that someone is trying to keep your dog. If this happens, put up twice as many flyers and watch more carefully. The more flyers being put up, a possible thief may give up. Take flyers (and tape) to businesses in area to put on display. Ask EVERY business... restaurants, gas stations, groomers, hair and nail salons, etc. Take flyers (and tape) to food delivery and other delivery places. Ask if the drivers can pass out. Give flyers to the mail carrier and UPS drivers. Give flyers to the trash collection driver. Don’t put anything inside a mailbox. Instead, leave the flyer on the door or sticking out visible under the mat if no one is home. Ask nearby schools to post flyers up in the school and on school buses. Children have good memories. Google “veterinarians near (your address)" and print or write down the list. Call & ask for an email to send a flyer. Make a note next to each one with the date the flyer was sent. Go back & expand the area to do the same thing again. If dog is not home in a week, send them all the flyer again & make a note of the date again. Keep doing that till your dog is home. Put ads on Craigslist in Lost & Found section & in Pets section every few days. Check those sections daily for a found ad. Also check for dog for sale. If you see your dog for sale take a screen shot of the ad & be sure to include the URL of the ad & numbers at the bottom of the ad so that it can be traced, in case ad is removed. DO NOT call ad yourself. Get someone who can call & NOT be emotional about it & pretend to want to buy the dog. DO NOT go to meet anyone ALONE EVER. Take back up. Notify the police BEFORE you go or meet at police station. Be SAFE!! Post on every Facebook page you can find to post a lost pet. *Make the flyer your profile photo* Check your “other” messages folder on Facebook often in case people try to message you. Messages from people who are not your ‘friends’ will usually go into the ‘Other’ folder, instead of your inbox. GO TO the shelters in area AT LEAST every other day. See EVERY dog they have including the sick dogs that are sometimes in other area. GO TO the shelter SO OFTEN that every employee knows your dog's name. GO TO the shelter so often that every employee there would recognize you in a Walmart & know your dog's name. Instruct everyone that is helping you to NOT call or chase your dog. This will prolong your search. If they see your dog, sit or lie down (no eye contact) & gently toss out tasty treats to lure your dog in. More places to take the smaller flyers... grocery stores/shopping centers & leave on cars. Don’t put them under the windshield wiper, because often those aren’t noticed until a person is in the car, & most won’t get back out to get the flyer. Instead, tape it to the driver’s side window, just above the door handle. Go to churches during the service & put on cars, or go before or after the service & hand out to people in person. The mailbox area at apartments & laundromats. Put a large flyer on your own car window & write with white shoe polish in large letters "Lost Dog". It's like a rolling advertisement. The phone number that is put on flyers, change your voice mail to reflect your missing dog so if someone calls in they will be prompted to leave detailed information - or to text you right away Look on all facebook groups you can find.
