Please help me find my cat. He is an indoor cat and probably very scared, cold, and hungry. I need to get him back, I don’t know what I will do without him.

I’m sure you are very worried. The ideas I’m sharing are from a study of 1,232 lost cats by Dr. Jacquline Rand, an animal expert. The number one method that was the most successful in recovering a missing cat was conducting a physical search of the area. Most escaped indoor-only cats were roughly a 2 ½ house radius from their owner’s home. They are so frightened by their outdoor surroundings that they will hide. They may not even come if you call for them. Do a deep search around your home. Check around air-conditioning units, window, wells, under decks, in and around sheds, in drainage pipes, bushes and trees, under and around cars and other vehicles. Do this every day. Use a soft voice. Don’t make a lot of noise. Your cat may not recognize your voice outside and could be chased away by loud noises. IMPORTANT: Ask your neighbors if you can go in their backyard and look around or check in their shed, garage, etc. Asking others to look for you doesn’t always work. People don’t follow through. They may not be able to bend down and look under decks, etc. It's VERY important that you look as late at night or early in the morning as you can. This is the time when your cat will come out because it is quiet and they don’t feel as threatened. Many cats are found between 3 AM and 5 AM. One owner asked his neighbors if he could check in the backyard during the evening and early on the morning. He also contacted the police and let them know that he would be searching in backyards during these hours. Good idea! If you have other animals, watch them. If they are spending a lot of time looking out a certain window, that’s a good indication the missing cat is in that area. Wildlife and motion activated cameras are also helpful. Ask neighbors to check their Ring camera if they have one . IMPORTANT: DO NOT leave the litter box or food outside. It can attract predators and aggressive animals that could scare your cat further away. Animals are territorial. Tomcats will be attracted to the waste in a litter box. That’s why cats cover up their waste to avoid predators and aggressive cats. Put items with your scent on them like bedding or used clothing near the area where your cat escaped. Your scent will draw your cat home. If it is safe, leave a door or window slightly open so your cat can re-enter. Leave a garage door open if possible. Close any other pets in a room during this time so they don’t escape! ***Many people are successful trapping their indoor only cats. After about 3-5 days, your cat will be getting very hungry and will be seeking food. A humane trap could lure your cat in. If you decide to trap, you must watch the trap very closely. YouTube has some good videos on how to use a humane trap. Trapping is very effective. In addition make mini flyers and hand them out to your neighbors. Put a LARGE sign in your front yard that says: LOST PET LIVES HERE. Include contact info and a photo. Contact every vet clinic, emergency clinic, groomer, and pet store in the area. Mailing a flyer with your information to businesses is one way to get the word out. Join every lost pet site and post information on the site. Contact the Humane Society and all shelters. Tell your mail delivery person and any food delivery people in the area. Lawn workers and construction people may have seen your cat. Stay strong! Don’t give up. Good luck.😻
