LOST CAT OPEN DOOR Scatter the contents of your hoover bag around the outside boundary of your home - they can scent their way home from miles away, using the familiar smell of your home. If putting out clothing make sure that it hasn’t been washed so that it smells of “you”. Going out late at night/ early morning when it is quieter and less noise distraction around will make it easier for you to hear each other’s calls. If you are calling for him make sure you do this as you walk towards your home not away from it so that if he follows the direction of your voice you’re leading him home, not further away. Also ask any neighbours to check their sheds/ outbuildings in case he’s been inquisitive and got trapped inside somewhere. If he is an indoor cat he is likely scared and hiding somewhere very close by - look under/behind any items/objects that he may be seeking shelter from - under bushes, behind bins etc. when searching at night take a torch - the light from its beam will reflect in his eyes and you will be able to spot him even if he doesn’t respond to your calls. Put up posters in all surrounding streets and inform the microchip company that he is missing.Put out water, and some of YOUR dirty clothes (dirty socks are nice and stinky)/blankets (dry in dryer first to enhance smell). Depending on the weather, you might want to put out a plastic tub with straw for shelter. Go out every morning and evening walking (folks seem successful around 10:30 p.m., but don't go alone) with food/treats in bowl rattling it, calling your cats name. Cats are often hiding within a 5-house radius. Do NOT give up. There was a cat a week or so ago, they went out every night for 5 nights, finally on the 5th night, they heard it's meow, it was trapped in a neighbor's shed. Another was hiding in a tree from the neighbor's dogs. Check buildings, bushes, trees, and storm drains around your house. Also in the house/garage, keep all doors/closets OPEN in case it's hiding in the house. If you can, leave door cracked open from which cat would most likely sneak back in during the night. If desperate, sprinkle your urine near the cracked door as stronger scent guidance. Worked for us!

Hang some of your unwashed clothing outside where the kitty can catch your scent

Indoor only cats rarely will show themselves during the daytime & often will not respond to you calling them. So the chances of a neighbor or even you seeing them during the daytime is unfortunately pretty low. They hide close by, then often return during the night to where they got out of your house, & they try to get back in. If your cat is strictly an indoor cat, then if possible, try leaving the exit point open after dark to see if they will walk back in on their own. Having a camera set up outside the exit point is very helpful to alert you if they’re approaching. If you don’t have a camera at the door your cat escaped through, I recommend buying one today or tomorrow at Walmart & get it set up before dark. If you can’t leave the exit point open after dark, then you still need to set a motion activated camera outside the exit point so you will be alerted if your cat returns during the night. Often you’re sleeping & you don’t know that your cat is returning, trying to find a way back inside. If you get a sighting on the camera, then you can set a humane trap outside the exit point the following night & have it ready at dark. Either way, do not go outside once you leave the exit point open OR you’ve set a humane trap. Let the camera do the work of alerting you to movement outside that door. I don’t recommend setting food or a humane trap outside the exit point until you get a sighting on the camera. You don’t want to attract wildlife & other roaming cats, which will prevent your cat from approaching by having food sitting outside the exit point. Wait until you know your cat is returning before setting a humane trap. Your cat probably won’t approach your house if you’re outside walking around either. Secure any other pets in another room if you leave the exit point open. Place some of your worn clothes outside the exit point for scent & just inside the door. Do not put the litter box outside as it will attract other neighborhood cats who will prevent your cat from returning. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_-Dqmx2sU&pp=0gcJCWQCo7VqN5tD&ra=m

Thoroughly check inside the house - closets, in the bed box spring, under furniture etc. If outside good chance they're hiding close by, will come out when the area's quiet (late night, early morning)
